LEGO: the best LEGO Creator Expert sets to “rebuild” in an alternative model

LEGO: the best LEGO Creator Expert sets to “rebuild” in an alternative model
What are alternative LEGO Creator Expert sets? There is a (relatively) new trend in the community of brick enthusiasts: the alternative model. We start from an official set and create an alternative model, with the double challenge of inventing a model "from scratch" and making it by making use of only the pieces included in the official set itself.

UPDATE OCTOBER 2020 : the shorter and rainy days are coming. What could be better to spend them at home, in the warmth and with a cup of hot chocolate in front of them, to disassemble our Creator Expert Classic Car sets and use the pieces to create new models? Let's add two more to the list published in recent months.

The LEGO Creator Expert “Classic Car” line (in addition to the sets of the LEGO Speed Champions theme) lends itself particularly well to this design methodology: they are very rich sets of pieces, all quite standard (unlike what happens for other themes, the Creator Expert sets do not use particularly “specialized” pieces). Virtually all the "car" sets of the theme have been transformed into alternative models.

Alternative LEGO Creator Expert

What we propose below is a list of alternative versions of the best LEGO sets Creator Expert "Classic Car", with links to instructions (some downloadable for free, others for a fee). Attention, it is not a ranking: we report them in strict order of "release" on the shelves. We will periodically come back to report new designs of alternative models of the official sets to add to your collection.

MINI Cooper # 10242 | € 275.99 - Amazon.co.uk

There are many alternative models for this now somewhat dated set, of which we can find the instructions on the Rebrickable.com platform, but the ones we want to recommend are those designed by monstermatou (Shelby AC Cobra and Renault Floride) and from NKubate (Formula 1 car).

Monstermatou instructions: Shelby AC Cobra (free) and Renault Floride (€ 6.00 with Paypal) and NKubate instructions: F1 Racer (free)

Ferrari F40 # 10248 | from € 204.00 - eBay.it

Instructions for various alternative versions have also been created for this set now retired from production. The ones we propose here are those of Kirvet (Ferrari F1, Ferrari 312 T2, Audi Quattro S1 and "Midnight", a fantasy spider) and those of the now usual Nkubate (F1 Racer).

The instructions by Kirvet: “4-in-1” Pack (€ 20.00 with Paypal) Instructions: F1 Racer (€ 7.50 with Paypal)

Volkswagen T1 Camper Van # 10220 | € 99.99 - LEGO Shop @ Home

The only AFOL Designer to have tried his hand at this set that is breaking shelf records is KeepOnBricking (YouTube channel). Using the pieces of the set you can build a Volkswagen Golf Caddy Pick-up (image) or a model inspired by the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette C2 Cabrio (image).

Instructions: Volkswagen Golf Caddy (€ 10.00 with Paypal) Instructions: 1963 Chevrolet Corvette C2 Cabrio (€ 7.50 with Paypal)

Volkswagen Beetle # 10252 | € 94.99 - LEGO Shop @ Home

London Bus # 10258 | € 119.99 - LEGO Shop @ Home

Again, more than one AFOL Designer has designed an alternative version of the official set. If only for the fact that he was the first to design his own project, we chose to carry out the one of KeepOnBricking: Pick-Up (free on Rebrickable)

James Bond Aston Martin DB5 # 10262 | € 149.99 - LEGO Shop @ Home

Despite being the most expensive set in the LEGO Creator Expert “Classic Car” line, the set boasts numerous alternative versions. Also in this case, we have chosen to build the versions of KeepOnBricking (could he exempt himself from MOCare also this set?) As he was the first to publish his projects shortly after the release of the official set.

Sono 3 alternative models we have built:

Instructions: Pick-Up (free on Rebrickable) Instructions: Hot Rod (free on Rebrickable) Instructions: Turbo Buggy (€ 5.75 with Paypal)

Ford Mustang # 10265 | € 139.99 - LEGO Shop @ Home

No previous model in the LEGO Creator Expert “Classic Car” line has received as much attention from AFOL Designers as this Ford Mustang set: only on Rebrickable. com projects are over 15 (constantly increasing)! In addition to the usual KeepOnBricking, NKubate and various other MOC Designers, this time to try their hand at the design of an alternative model we also found Firas Abu-Jaber, an AFOL Designer very well known in the community of LEGO enthusiasts because of his brick models of some among the most iconic cars in the history of motoring, both modern and vintage. Could we have refrained from building (even) some of its alternative models? Absolutely not ... and we look forward to the instructions of the other two models that Simone Bissi, his very Italian and very good partner for the creation of the instructions, is working on: a 1970 Dodge Charger and a Vintage Pick-Up (you can see them in the photo below).

KeepOnBricking instructions: Buggy (€ 7.50 with Paypal) Lowrider instructions (€ 10.50 with Paypal) NKubate instructions: Pick-Up (€ 12.50 with Paypal) Firas Abu-Jaber's instructions: Mustang Shelby GT500 ($ 15.00 with Paypal)

FIAT 500 # 10271 | € 79.99 - LEGO Shop @ Home

The usual KeepOnBricking never fails: exactly one week after the launch of the LEGO Creator Expert # 10271 Fiat 500 set (Turin, February 29, 2020), the ours has published the first alternative model: a "Vintage Coupe" to be built!

KeepOnBricking instructions: Vintage Coup (€ 7.99 with Paypal) What do you think of our list of the best LEGO sets with which build an alternative model? Are you ready to take apart the sets of your collection and try it?
