Kioxia announces the development of PCI Express 5.0 SSD with E3.S form factor
Kioxia America, formerly known as Toshiba Memory America, has announced that it is working on new SSDs intended for the enterprise and data center market. The company firmly believes that the EDSFF E3.Short (E3.S) and E3.Long (E3.L) form factors represent the future in this area, as they allow to support greater loads than the conventional 2.5 "format. . In fact, the form factors we mentioned earlier support up to 40W and are ready to take advantage of the level of performance offered by the next PCI Express 5.0 interface. In addition, the units are equipped with a better heat dissipation system to better cope with higher temperatures. The E3.S format will contribute to the design and development of new generation systems, such as servers and AFA (All-Flash-Array) systems, both on cloud and corporate servers.

Kioxia has announced the development of E3.S SSDs that connect to the host system via a standard PCIe connector, just like common NVMe SSDs, graphics cards or network cards, and measure only 104.9 x 76 x 3.5mm. The company has not yet disclosed the official name of the product or disclosed any performance data, but it should have the capacity of 3.84TB. "Additional formats and options will also be supported, including E3.S thick (16.8mm) and E3.L thin" - said Kioxia in his announcement.

According to the manufacturer, E3.S SSDs could exploit up to eight PCIe 4.0 lines with a consumption of 28W and use the same key components of the recent PCIe 4.0 CM6 SSDs that the company launched last February. With this in mind, E3.S units should be equipped with an 18-channel Kioxia controller accompanied by its 96-layer TLC NAND 3D chips.

The series CM6 offers fast sequential read and write respectively of 6,200 MB/s 4,000 MB/s. With regard to the performance in input/output will exceed 1.4 million of reads IOPS and 350,000 scriptures IOPS. However, the units of CM6 are limited to four lines PCIe 4.0 devices and E3.S should, for this reason, offer better performance, because you can count on the eight lines of the PCIe 4.0.
