And if up to now it was thought that the virus somehow spared the youngest ones, now the most affected seem to be them. According to the latest data of the Higher Institute of Health (ISS), relating to the last 30 days and updated to 14 July, the profile of the people most frequently infected has changed: the average age of the new positives, in fact, has fallen to 47 years . A significant difference if you consider that at the beginning of the pandemic from Covid-19 to cause greater concern were the over 60.

From what emerges from the latest data on cases of contagion of coronavirus by age groups, in the ' the last period, the over 70s represent 18% of new cases, while the contagion in the age group between 19 and 50 significantly increases, 47.5% of all confirmed cases overall. Even for the youngest, the number of positives is increasing: young people aged 0 to 18 represent 10.2%. While, the age group between 51 and 70, equal to 24.3% in total, is the second most affected. However, ISS points out, young people are the most asymptomatic, the highest numbers of those who have found themselves positive are in the 7-19 and 20-29 bands.

But why the new coronavirus seems to be now hitting more young people ? Probably the problem reside in a relaxation, especially in this age group, in applying the common sense and comply with the necessary strategies to limit the spread of the new coronavirus , as to avoid mass gatherings and to wear masks when it is not possible to comply with the distancing of the social . To express an opinion on the topic was Francesco Vaia , medical director of the Istituto Spallanzani of Rome, who in his recent post published on Facebook has launched an appeal to young people, by writing: “ Dear Young people, proven to be the best part of this company, never hookups, please! Guided in the first line of this ‘war’, that we will win surely, but also, and above all, proving to be able to apply the rules with discipline and sense of duty”. Goto also highlights the importance of safeguarding those most at risk . “Pay attention to how you are forming new infections, protect your parents and your grandparents with an attitude of responsibility. Keep your guard up! ”

to be young, then, should not be understood as a protection from the risk of being infected and exhibit symptoms of the disease milder. In addition to being now the most affected by the new coronavirus , in fact, young people may also be more vulnerable and at greater risk of developing more severe disease . In a report of a new study just published in the Journal of Adolescent Health , in which researchers at the University of California San Francisco tell the story of how a young american about three, between the ages of 18 and 25 years, may fall seriously ill, and the smoke would be in part responsible. “Recent evidence indicates that smoking is associated with an increased likelihood of progression of the Covid-19, including an increase in the severity of the disease, hospitalization or death in the icu,” explains to Cnn by Sally Adams , author of the study. “Smoking can have significant effects in the young, which typically record low rates for most chronic diseases”.
