From 20 October the new digital terrestrial starts

How to check the compatibility of your television with the new standard and what are the bonuses for the purchase of the new devices

Television (Photo by Mohamed Hassan / Pixabay) The transition to the new digital television will begin partially October 20: Rai and Mediaset will discontinue the encoding of Mpeg-2 images in favor of Mpeg-4 for some of their channels. These are mostly thematic programs, chosen on a voluntary basis by the broadcasters and which will therefore only be visible in high definition (HD). The latter is usually compatible with televisions sold since 2010. In any case, it is a good idea to simply check the channels received by your device, even through the appropriate decoder.

Hd TV channels from 20 October

At Rai, the transition to the new coding concerns nine "thematic" channels: Rai 4, Rai 5, Rai Movie, Rai Yoyo, Rai Sport + Hd, Rai Storia, Rai Gulp, Rai Premium and Rai Scuola . The three flagship networks Rai1, Rai2 and Rai3, and the information network Rainews24, will remain visible simultaneously, in both high and low resolution, to all users. For Mediaset, on the other hand, the specific channels TgCom24, Mediaset Italia 2, Boing Plus, Radio 105, R101 Tv and Virgin Radio Tv will be the forerunners for HD. All the other channels will remain visible at the same time.

How to check the HD on the TV

To understand if your device supports high definition, just tune into a channel between: 501 for Raiuno HD; 505 for Channel 5 Hd; 507 for LA7 Hd. If at least one is visible, the TV is ready to transition. “With the modification of the coding it will not be necessary to replace the antennas. It will only be necessary to re-tune the television programs - explain from the Ministry of Economic Development (Mise) -. The other initiatives relating to the discontinuation of the Dvbt / Mpeg-2 encoding will be communicated to users at a later date. Finally, the complete replacement of the Mpeg-2 encoding will be defined with a provision that will be issued by the end of 2021 ”.

TV bonuses

In the event that the verification gives a negative response, it will be necessary to have a compatible decoder or to scrap the TV, using in this case a maximum bonus of 100 euros or in any case equal to 20% of the price for the purchase of a new appliance. The measure is valid for everyone, once per family unit, and will remain active until 31 December 2022, or when the allocated funds, equal to 250 million euros, are exhausted. For families with an ISEE income not exceeding 20 thousand euros, this incentive can be combined with the similar TV bonus of 50 euros.

The new DVBT-2 standard in 2023

Mise has prepared a list of compatible devices, which can also be used to check whether the one in possession is already suitable. The broadcasting revolution also implies another phase: the activation of the DVBT-2 standard throughout Italy from January 2023, which will be preceded by a series of regional re-tunings, which will end on June 30, 2022.

I Dealers have been forced to sell DVB-T2 televisions with Hevc Main 10 encoding since December 22, 2018. To check if the receiver is ready for the new standard, just view test channels 100 and 200 and if so, the written “Test Hevc Main10”. Of course, the tv bonus can also be used to update your equipment even on this last technological case.
