AMD Ryzen 5000: Top power, but currently rare and expensive

AMD Ryzen 5000 - Zen 3 is here

The new AMD Ryzen 5000 processors came onto the market last week. We take a closer look at the models, availability, prices and technology, but above all the performance of the four new models Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 7 5800X as well as Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X. To do this, we analyze tests by other editorial offices that have already been published. We had already put together a list of some of these tests a few days ago in our corresponding news.

Of course, we then incorporate the findings into a small CPU purchase advice, and we have put together an overview of 30 Socket AM4 motherboards with the two current chipsets B550 and X570 that go with the new Ryzen 5000.

Ryzen - strength lies in tranquility

Ryzen is pronounced "travel", just like the English word "risen", which means something like ascended or even reborn. The older ones among you still remember: Before the first Ryzen models came on the market, AMD was rather lagging behind in the CPU market. With Ryzen, a kind of rebirth did indeed happen. In addition, the name of the CPU architecture is also in the name Ryzen: Zen.

A good month ago there was a keynote from AMD in which the new Ryzen 5000 CPUs were officially presented. Source: AMD Keynote-Video Zen is also the short form for Zen Buddhism, which is about drawing true strength through serenity. Ryzen is therefore a very successful play on words, provided that AMD really wanted to express name by name, to penetrate again into top areas of processors with calm and serenity. But can AMD confirm the success of the 1000, 2000 and 3000 Ryzen models with the new Zen 3 CPUs, i.e. the Ryzen CPUs of the 5000 series? We'll take a closer look at that later. But first let's take a look at the four new models.

Ryzen 5000: Models, Availability, Prices

The Ryzen 4000 models have been left out, at least for desktop systems. For notebooks there was a refresh from Zen 2 in the summer, which was given the 4000 name - so AMD could not and did not want to use the 4000 series nomenclature for the latest desktop CPUs. Each of the four new Ryzen 5000 models will likely appeal to different users. What is still missing with Zen 3 is an affordable entry-level model - because the Ryzen 5 5600X appears to be attractive for a decent gaming PC. This cheapest of the four new CPUs costs just under 300 euros in terms of AMD's price recommendation. A Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i5-10400F costs over 100 euros less. Both are already great gaming CPUs that, like the Ryzen 5 5600X, also offer six cores and 12 threads. But if the performance is right and the Ryzen 5 5600X may drop a little in price, it will also be a best buy. We will see this later.

The same applies to the Ryzen 7 5800X in comparison with the Ryzen 7 3700X and 3800X as well as the Core i7-10700 models. These 8-core CPUs are recommended if, for example, you also stream while gaming or if you use things like video editing software on a slightly higher level. The Ryzen 9 models with their 12 or even 16 cores are already more in the direction of professional suitability. But if you have enough change and just want the best CPU you can get for gaming, you could also get by with the prices of the Ryzen 9 CPUs. Here is an overview of the four new Ryzen models:

Model name Ryzen 5 5600X Ryzen 7 5800X Ryzen 9 5900X Ryzen 9 5950X Cores 6 8 12 16 Threads 12 16 24 32 Standard clock rate 3.7 GHz 3.8 GHz 3 , 7 GHz 3.4 GHz boost clock 4.6 GHz 4.7 GHz 4.8 GHz 4.9 GHz TDP 65 watts 105 watts 105 watts 105 watts Level 3 cache 32 MB 32 MB 64 MB 64 MB UVP AMD 299 Euro 449 Euro 549 Euro 799 Euro Current price from 419 Euro 589 Euro not listed not listed As you can see from the two price lines, there is currently a problem. Because the new Ryzen CPUs are currently hardly available in Germany and are only listed overpriced, at least according to PC Games hardware price comparison as of November 13th, 12 noon. We don't know whether the demand was surprisingly high or whether AMD has problems with production. The Ryzen 5 5600X currently costs more than 400 euros, the Ryzen 7 5800X over 580 euros, both of which are not even available from stock. The difference to the AMD price recommendation is over 100 euros. The two Ryzen 9 processors are currently not listed as a reputable German online shop. We will of course consider this situation in our performance analysis when it comes to the CPU purchase recommendations.
