Linux, Windows, macOS: market share at the end of August
New month, new statistics for the market share of desktop operating systems. Those reported in the article refer to the numbers detected at the end of August by NetMarketShare taking into consideration the computers (fixed and portable) distributed globally.

Market share desktop operating systems: what changed in August

The quota assigned to Windows is essentially unchanged, while macOS registers a jump of more than half a percentage point and Linux slips. On the other hand, Chrome OS has stopped for some time now.

Windows 86.98% (-0.05%); macOS 9.55% (+ 0.60%); Linux 2.69% (-0.88%); Chrome OS 0.38% (-0.01%).

Focusing attention on individual releases, Windows 10 shows a slightly higher growth than the decline of Windows 7, most likely linked to the updates triggered by the end of the support period. The 10.15 Catalina edition of the Apple platform is also positive, waiting for the Big Sur heir to make its debut.

Windows 10 60.57% (+ 1.20%); Windows 7 22.31% (-1.03%); macOS 10.15 5.03% (+ 0.50%); Windows 8.1 2.69% (-0.18%); macOS 10.14 1.96% (+ 0.09%); macOS 10.13 1.26% (unchanged); Windows XP 0.78% (-0.04%); Windows 8 0.53% (unchanged).

In this round NetMarketShare used a different method to evaluate the share to be assigned to Ubuntu (which is 0.34%) and other Linux distributions, making it impossible to compare with the previous month. In this regard, we point out that just this week a brand like Lenovo announced the debut of the eighth generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop with Fedora pre-installed, while at the end of June Dell had brought the XPS 13 Developer Edition model with standard Ubuntu to the market.
