Google and Facebook's plan to reduce emissions to zero in 2030

The search engine giant and the social network plan a ten-year plan to refuel only with clean energy

Wind power plant in Denmark (Getty Images) Google and Facebook intend to bring their carbon dioxide emissions to zero by 2030. "The science is clear: the world must act now if we are to avoid the worst consequences of climate change," Sundar Pichai, chief executive of the Mountain View giant, said on the company's blog. “Climate change is real. Science is unmistakable and the need to act becomes more urgent every day, "echoes Facebook on in its blogpost.

Google's journey

Google claims to have been the first major company technology to become carbon neutral in 2007. Ten years later it crossed the line of 100% energy consumption from renewable sources, becoming the largest company in the world to buy green energy. But now the company wants to make a greater effort and is committed, according to Pichai, "24 hours a day, 7 days a week" to use energy that is produced without carbon emissions.

The ad estimates that this further environmental commitment from Google will generate "over 20,000 new jobs for clean energy and associated sectors, in the US and around the world, by 2025". Google's data centers and campuses around the world will therefore be powered with clean energy. "This is much more challenging than the traditional approach of combining energy use with renewable energy," Pichai comments, "but we are working to do it by 2030".
