Ubuntu 21.10 now available for desktop and server

Windows isn't the only operating system with a new version to show off. Ubuntu, the Debian-based Linux distribution, has in fact recently reached the 21.10 edition (also known as Impish Indri) and many things have changed.

Ubuntu is a popular choice for both new and old Linux users. experts and on version 21.10 a new shell has been integrated, Gnome 40, which starts with a new screen related to activities instead of a blank desktop. The favorites bar is now at the bottom of the screen and looks more like the macOS dock than ever. The program launcher is present on the left side of the screen (but this can be changed), with the workspaces - virtual desktops - turned into thumbnails when in use. The rounded corners are also noticeable on windows, Gnome applications and the workspace switcher.

Security is enhanced by a new intelligent randomization of the kernel stack in memory at each system call on both the amd64 and arm64 architectures with, it is claimed, minimal impact on performance. Kernel Electric Fence, a runtime memory error detector, is also supported.

Elsewhere, there are many changes that make this build look like a version intended for developers. There is immediate compatibility with Windows Subsystem for Linux, while PHP gets an update to version 8 and the GNU Compiler Collection moves to version 11, with front-ends for C and C ++ as well as other languages. If artificial intelligence or machine learning is your thing, you will appreciate the new Apache Cassandra snap package. Speaking of snap, there is also one for Firefox, both for the latest version and for the one with extended browser support.
