Kioxia: fast speeds for the new XD6, PCIe 4.0 SSD for datacenter
Kioxia presented one of the first SSDs in the sector with EDSSF E1.S form factor and PCI Express 4.0 x4 interface. Kioxia XD6 drives comply with the NVMe Cloud SSD specification (developed by the Open Compute Platform organization) and are designed for applications that require consistently high performance, as well as good reliability and thermal management.

The new XD6 SSDs from Kioxia are equipped with the company's 3D TLC NAND memories and a new controller that supports all the features expected of an NVMe 1.3c optimized chip, including end-to-end data protection, TCG security features. Opal, sanitize instant erase (SIE) capacity, hot plug, extended information on the health of the unit and protection from power loss (via capacitors directly on the board).

The manufacturer plans to offer its XD6 series units in E1.S 9.5mm, 15mm and 25mm form factors. Drives will have different capacities depending on their physical size.

Performance-wise, Kioxia claims that XD6 SSDs will offer sequential read and write speeds of up to 6,500MB / s and 2,400MB / respectively, respectively. s, as well as having low latency. Consumption is expected to be around 15W and for this reason the devices are equipped with a rather generous heatsink.

Staying on the subject, we note that the SSD form factors for data centers and enterprises (EDSFF) have been developed mainly to increase the capacity of the drives (and consequently the storage density of the servers), as well as to optimize their thermal performance and thus ensure constant performance.

The EDSFF E1.S form factor was designed for short devices, but at the same time capable of storing more data than its M.2 counterparts. With a rather large cooling system, the Kioxia XD6 was not designed to provide the maximum storage density, but it will certainly offer high performance even under high loads, as its controller will never have to slow down due to overheating.

Pricing and availability details have not yet been revealed.
