Will the Ryzen 7 4800U be the heart of the new Surface Laptop?

It was last fall when Microsoft introduced some new Surface line products including the seventh generation of the 2in1 Surface Pro and the third generation of the 13 and 15-inch Surface Laptops. The latter, for the uninitiated, are notebooks featuring the classic clamshell format with 3: 2 touch-screen, premium materials and keyboard with alacantra finish for some versions.

Thanks to the collaboration between Microsoft and AMD, the third generation Surface Laptops, for the first time, have also been made available with a "red" CPU. Specifically, the "Surface Edition" processors were born from the collaboration, namely the Ryzen 5 3850U and the Ryzen 7 3780U. These models, compared to the classic counterparts, have a more efficient integrated GPU, respectively from 9 and 11 CU instead of 8 and 10. Today, after about eight months since then, the first rumors about the Surface Laptops of next are starting to circulate generation, or the fourth.

According to the well-known @TUM_APISAK the next Surface Laptop, or at least one of its versions, will mount the Ryzen 7 4800U. The leaker has in fact published on his Twitter profile a screenshot showing the results obtained with 3D Mark on a machine supplied by Microsoft that mounts the Ryzen 7 4800U and many are ready to bet that it may be an example of Surface Laptop of fourth generation.

The characteristics of the CPU in question are now known and include an octa-core CPU with SMT (simultaneous multithreading, which allows having two threads per core to improve performance in parallelized loads and multitasking) for a total of 16 threads, 8MB of L3 cache, 4MB of L2 cache, 15W of TDP and 7nm FinFET production process. Integrated GPU side, however, we find a Vega with 8 CU.

sales of the Surface Laptops with AMD processors have gone very well, so it is also plausible that Microsoft can continue on the same line, confirming the processors “red” for the next lineup of laptops.
