What do we know about Mum

Google unveiled a new search algorithm a thousand times more powerful than its predecessor and capable of delivering excellent results even to the most complex search queries

(image: Google) During the annual Google I / o 2021 conference , Big G has bet heavily on artificial intelligence by integrating it more into its research system. In order to guarantee a simplified system, the Google Ai team created a new model based on the pre-existing Bert (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) and, unlike its predecessor, capable of handling more complex searches.

The new algorithm takes the name of Multitask Unified Model or more simply Mum. "Whenever we take a leap forward with artificial intelligence to make the world's information more accessible, we do it responsibly. Every improvement to Google Search undergoes a rigorous evaluation process to ensure that we are delivering the most relevant and useful results, ”Pandu Nayak, vice president of Google Search explains in the company's blogpost.

Big G, presenting Mum , explained that the new algorithm is a thousand times more powerful than Bert. A thousand, in this case, is not a far-fetched number: they are the nodes of the neural network on which Mum is designed. The idea behind this algorithm is to try to recreate the nerve synapses of the human brain and each node is a decision point through which the algorithm passes the user's search.

Mum was trained by the Big G team in 75 different languages using all the crawled data on the open web - that is, public online content - and, Google announced, removing the lower quality content . Thanks to his complexity, Mum according to the company will be able to provide results that are not a simple list of links that match the keywords entered by the user. If the query is complex, Mum will understand the language and generate a response that may be comparable to that provided by an expert in the field. This is possible because the new algorithm is also multimodal and, therefore, the narration of the search results could also take place via images or videos that accompany links to various relevant content.

Furthermore, being trained on multiple languages, Mum will be able to break down the language barrier by performing searches simultaneously on multiple sources in different languages and providing the results in the user's language.
