Huawei Mate 40 Pro, the king of smartphone photography

Huawei Mate 40 Pro, the king of smartphone photography
Huawei Mate 40 Pro is the king of smartphone photography. To crown him DxOMark, the prestigious French portal that analyzes the photographic quality of smartphones. Considering the excellent work done so far by the Chinese giant, there was practically no doubt that the new top of the range could become the reference point for the sector. The technical data sheet had already given us a taste of it, but then everything was wonderfully confirmed during the tests conducted in the field, as we have already told you in our review.

We have therefore decided to dedicate an in-depth analysis to performance photos of Mate 40 Pro. In this article, we will show you all the potential hidden behind that particular Space Ring, the iconic circular photographic sector that characterizes the spearhead of Huawei.

Excellence is called Mate 40 Pro

Let's start with the technical characteristics. Mate 40 Pro integrates three cameras on the beautiful rear panel. 50 Megapixel main sensor (23mm, f / 1.9) is paired with a 20 Megapixel wide angle (18mm, f / 1.8) and a 12 MP periscope telephoto lens (125mm, f / 3.4) with optical stabilization image. The latter sensor enables 5X optical, 10X hybrid and 50X digital zoom. What appears to be a fourth camera is actually a laser-focused sensor that replaces the ToF sensor seen on the P40 Pro and has proven to be extremely effective.

It is this versatility of use that makes the difference. The Mate 40 Pro's main camera manages to pull off simply gorgeous shots in any situation. Especially surprising is the dynamic range even in low light conditions. As you can see from the photos included in the article, the level of detail present is extremely high and even the backlit photos have unprecedented quality. It is really impossible to find a fault.

The results obtained from the wide-angle sensor are also excellent. It is always very useful to have a sensor available with which to immortalize very large subjects. The not particularly wide field of view allows you to have photos with an above average quality and to reduce the annoying distortion usually seen on wide-angle shots.

What about the telephoto lens? Since the periscope lens was introduced on the P30 Pro, Huawei has been fine-tuning the performance. Compared to previous models, stabilization has been significantly improved when going further with image enlargements. In other words, the images taken using the zoom (both optical and digital) are much more defined and with excellent sharpness even in night shots. It's always a pleasant surprise to see how far it can push the zoom of the flagship Huawei products.
The portrait mode Mate 40 Pro will make happy those who love this type of shots. The bokeh effect has a truly natural look that doesn't stray far from that of professional cameras. The same goes for selfies too. Not surprisingly, even in this area, there is currently no other smartphone capable of doing better. Without forgetting the possibility to choose between different shooting widths. This way, group selfies won't be a problem either. These results are thanks to the 13 Megapixel front sensor (f / 2.4), accompanied by a 3D ToF sensor.

As if all this were not enough, Huawei has at its disposal artificial intelligence algorithms able to improve some aspects of the photos in particular conditions. The defects visible before shooting in certain circumstances are eliminated by the AI. Not to mention the night mode which - as we have already seen on previous models - is really capable of working wonders. In fact, night shots remain equally high-level even without activating the appropriate mode. Rather. If there is some light available, we can completely avoid it and we will have a shot with an incredible level of detail in our hands.

The Mate 40 Pro also excels in video thanks to an effective stabilization of the image that makes the images fluid and stable, even if in motion, and with a perfect chromatic rendering of the scenes. The autofocus system, always precise, which adapts to any distance, is no exception. Noise is almost non-existent both in outdoor and indoor recordings. Furthermore, during the recording, it is possible to switch from a wide-angle view to a closer one, really very useful.

There are many software solutions made available by Huawei that will make the newcomer the perfect adventure companion. With the Tracking Shot function, we can lock onto the moving subject and always keep it in the center of the scene. By choosing Dual view, however, we can record simultaneously with both the front and rear cameras. There are also functions for social videos, such as Story Creator that allows you to create videos with cinematic effects automatically divided into several 15-second parts so that you can immediately share them on Instagram.

In short, Huawei Mate 40 Pro is practically perfect to immortalize your memories!

Mate 40 Pro is also a smartphone
