When Paradox Entertainment entered the computer games stage, things didn't look particularly good for the Swedish developer: The Svea Rike trilogy (from 1998), which was mostly still released under the old Target Games label, focused on the history of Sweden early modern times and was therefore only of real interest to locals. It was not until Europa Universalis (2000) that a global strategy game followed that simulated half the globe and was particularly popular in the USA. However, the program was so complex and complicated that it only appealed to hardcore strategists.

The first Hearts of Iron (2002) was certainly not a simple global strategy game, although it was thematically based on the World War II focused.
