Assemble that Passes # 298

Assembla che ti Passa is a weekly column that collects the main news related to PC gaming hardware and offers three configurations, divided by price ranges, designed for those who want to assemble or update their machine. As usual, suggestions are welcome and corrections welcome, as long as the tones are adequate. Another tip is to read the paragraphs presenting the configurations before you do battle in the comments.

Several months after the arrival of the new generation GPUs, assembling a budget or mid-range configuration is still complicated. On the NVIDIA side, the GeForce RTX 3060 has a rather high price, without considering the increases due to insufficient stocks and various speculations, while on the side of AMD the entry level option is still the Radeon RX 6700 XT. But the launch of the GeForce RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti for laptops, presumably favorites over desktop solutions given the ever-increasing demand for gaming laptops, would seem to anticipate the arrival of finally more affordable video cards, always net of price increases and problems. availability that seem inevitable, at least for the moment. Furthermore, a document published on the Eurasian Economic Commission website could indicate an imminent arrival of the Radeon RX 6600 and RX 6600 XT.

The document relates to ASRock's registration on May 11 of a series of Radeon RX 6600 and RX 6600 XT cards, apparently both equipped with 8GB of memory. And this factor could explain the delay compared to the first official appearance of AMD mid-range solutions. A few months ago, in fact, the registration of a 12 GB RX 5600 XT appeared on the Eurasian Economic Commission website, which could have been replaced by an 8 GB model, perhaps due to memory availability problems or in any case for some related reason. the discrepancy between IT components and demand.

Whatever the reason, the registration of several custom models of both would seem to prevent further changes and could therefore indicate the imminent arrival of the GPUs, perhaps during the now imminent Computex 2021. However, we believe little of this. Also this year the Taiwanese edition of the most important show for the world of technology will be exclusively online, with all the limits of the case. But the new AMD cards seem to be pretty close anyway. After appearing among the models supported by AIDA64 and GPU-Z, they have in fact returned to talk about them thanks to alleged specifications reported by the authoritative voice of Chiphell.

The specifications reported by the portal would arrive linked by the engineering samples of the Radeon RX 6600 XT, rumored to be equipped with a Navi 23 chip from 2048 Stream Processor, and the Radeon RX 6000, reportedly equipped with a neutered version of the Navi 23 GPU from, possibly, 1792 Stream Processor. The quantity of 8 GB of GDDR5 memory on a 128-bit interface is also reiterated. Nonetheless, they should still guarantee excellent performance for 1080p, considering that compared to the RX 6700 XT we are talking about 20% less power for the first and 30% for the second. However, the decline in ray accelerator could create some problems from this point of view, although many expect to see the FidelityFX Super Resolution, the upscaling supported by artificial intelligence in development at AMD, arrive in the next few weeks.

The landscape, in essence, could change considerably, finally guaranteeing more affordable mid-range or medium / low-end options and important news for an AMD that must somehow counter NVIDIA's DLSS. But we still expect availability problems in the field of desktop solutions, despite AMD has confirmed that it is ready to increase production. This is also due to the arrival of new laptops due to the launch of the new Intel laptop processors, the GeForce RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti Max-Q and the future arrival of the mobile Radeons.

But the industry is trying to do something to improve the situation. On the one hand there are the billionaire investments of Samsung, TSMC and even Intel, while on the other there is the new Semiconductors in America Coalition, a coalition of giants formed to counter the shortage of IT components. The goal is to obtain $ 50 billion in investments for all chip manufacturers operating on US soil, also encouraging research initiatives aimed at solving a problematic situation to say the least. Among other things, there is talk of a sort of "ceasefire" between the companies part of the coalition that includes Amazon Web Services, AMD, Apple, AT&T, Google, Intel, Qualcomm, Micron and Microsoft, all apparently decided to put the health of the American technology industry to its own gains. But with the arrival of Joe Biden, tensions with the East have subsided and in any case it may not be easy to obtain incentives in the shoes of very rich companies that thanks to the pandemic have increased their revenues, often sharply.

Budget configuration

The budget configuration is the one oriented to saving but it is not certain that there is no room for the upgrade where interesting prospects arise. The proposals in this range include solutions designed for low-tech games and 1080p-oriented builds.

With the Core i5-10400F on the rise, the Core i3-11100 untraceable, the low-end Ryzen 5000 still absent and the Core i5-11400F above 200 euros, we return to the Core i3-10100F, limited in number of cores and speed but at least available around 100 euros and still capable of valid gaming performance.

Despite a new increase, the GeForce GT 1030 remains the only affordable video card for the low-end, unless you focus on the Ryzen 5 3400G, equipped with an integrated Vega 11 GPU that compensates for some limitations in gaming with slightly more graphics power. We choose it, therefore, hoping in the meantime that the situation will improve.

Gaming Configuration

In the gaming segment there are usually those components that allow you to face the game on the PC without fear and to hold on for some time. The frame rate showdown is just around the corner but, with a good foundation, it's always possible to sell the old GPU before it devalues too much so you can buy a new one just in time to take on the next hardware-smashing blockbuster.

In the mid-range Intel remains in the lead in terms of convenience, especially this week with the Core i5-11600K, on sale, available at a price lower than that of the 11600KF. It then also adds integrated graphics to an offering that includes 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes and a net performance jump, at least in brute power, over its predecessor.

Turning to the GPU, the landscape has unfortunately not changed one iota. Even the most convenient solutions, unless you wait for the few timed offers usually destined to finish in a few seconds, are overpriced and well below the amount we would have paid, even just a year ago, for a mid-range card. .

Extra Configuration

The pushed configuration makes sense only for those who aim for high resolutions, aware that luxury often does not go hand in hand with rationality. On the other hand, let's face it, who doesn't like having a nice engine under the hood even if you have to respect the speed limit?

After focusing on the Ryzen 9 5900X, finally closer to the recommended price and excellent for those who need a lot of raw power, let's go back to the Ryzen 5800X, even more attractive after a further drop that makes it one of the most attractive, at the moment, of the new AMD lineup. On the other hand, it combines complete PCIe 4.0 connectivity and excellent gaming performance.

Unfortunately, only auctions, promotions and launches of new cards offer the possibility of buying a GPU without having to sell several internal organs. But it takes time and luck, while still paying inflated prices. For this reason, unless there is an urgent need, we advise you to be patient by configuring one of the less expensive 3080 models to act as a placeholder.
