One Piece: Red – International release date confusion

Sadly, as of July 23rd, the US and UK release dates for One Piece: Red has not yet been confirmed by either Toei Animation, Crunchyroll or the associated distribution partners at Anime Limited.

The movie is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theatres on August 6th, with the only other confirmed territories being France (August 10th) and Taiwan (August 19th)

The good news is that Crunchyroll has officially confirmed that the One Piece: Red film will open in both the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in “Fall 2022”.

“One Piece has been a cornerstone on Crunchyroll, delighting fans around the world. We’re thrilled to bring audiences the next adventure in this global franchise, and the adventure with a new stand-alone story in theatres.” – Senior Vice President of Global Commerce for Crunchyroll, Mitchel Berger, via Comic Book.

However, we expect that the specific US and UK release date for One Piece: Red will be shared at the upcoming Crunchyroll Expo event, which coincidentally runs from August 5th to 7th – slap bang in the middle of the domestic premiere in Japan.

“We’re excited to bring One Piece Film Red to theatres around the world this fall, which actually coincides with the 23rd anniversary of the One Piece franchise. This new film from creator Eiichiro Oda will truly captivate fans in a thrilling new adventure with the Straws Hats that features the debut of Uta – a mysterious new character in the world of One Piece.” – President and CEO of Toei Animation Masayuki Endo, via Collider.

Yesterday, July 22nd, the second official trailer for One Piece: Red premiered online after the film held its special early premiere in Tokyo, Japan.

The trailer featured the caption, “I will make the world happy with my song” What’s the reason behind of Uta’s tearful wish?” with the following synopsis provided:

“Uta — the most beloved singer in the world. Her voice, which she sings with while concealing her true identity, has been described as “otherworldly.” She will appear in public for the first time at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans — excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance — the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound.

The story begins with the shocking fact that she is “Shanks’ daughter. Uta stands on the stage, with the ordinary wish of “Making the world happy with my music.” There’s Gordon, a mysterious character who knows Uta’s past, and glimpses of Shanks’ shadow. On Elegia, the island of music, Luffy and Uta reunite for the first time since they last met 12 years ago in Foosha Village.” – One Piece: Red synopsis, via One Piece YouTube.

Celebrating 25 years of One Piece

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the One Piece series is arguably one of the platform’s most highly-anticipated upcoming projects and today, July 23rd, the cast shared a congratulatory message to Eiichiro Oda and the series’ mega-fanbase.

Showrunner Steven Maeda said that “25 years is a momentous occasion, one of my favourite characters is Usopp who I think is the most relatable of the Straw Hats in a lot of ways.”

Matt Owens would then add how “My favourite character is Trafalgar Law, he has the coolest power like all main characters in One Piece. He has a really sad and human backstory, these poor children have been put through so much, I don’t know, I think Law just needs a hug.”

“Congratulations again to Oda-san for 25 years. We’ve been doing this for a couple of years I don’t know how he does it, it’s pretty remarkable.” – Steven Maeda, via Netflix Anime.
