Sony charges fees for cross-play between platforms

New documents from the legal dispute between Epic and Apple show excerpts from the negotiations between Epic Games and Sony to enable crossplay for Fortnite. In an email to Sony, Epic Games wrote:

"We are announcing crossplay together with Sony. Epic will make Sony look like the hero. You decide when, where and how."

Epic also suggested adding a PlayStation logo to their E3 conference and offering exclusive content to PS Plus subscribers. According to the news, Epic Games wanted both sides to come out of the negotiations as winners.

Sony thanked them for the suggestions, but ultimately did not agree to the offer. The Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment America Gio Corsi replied:

"Thank you for the points from your email. I see a lot of good ideas for another partnership there. Crossplay is not a slam dunk, however, no matter how big the title is. As you know, a lot of companies have pursued this idea and no one can explain how cross-play improves the PlayStation business. "

Another document discloses that Sony requested compensation based on the title's revenue on other platforms. In other words, if most of the players are playing Fortnite on the PlayStation but making most of their purchases on other platforms, Epic Games will pay a fee to Sony. They may want to prevent them from having to bear the costs of the PSN infrastructure without being adequately rewarded.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed that Sony is the only company that charges such fees, and that Epic had to agree to these conditions in order to enable crossplay for Fortnite.
