The Grinch (2018)

The Grinch is a 2018 animated film directed by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier. Based on the 1957 short story written by Dr. Seuss, the film is produced by Illumination Entertainment and features Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the protagonist in the original version and Alessandro Gassman in the Italian version. Above the city of Who knows, inside a deep and comfortable cave, lives the Grinch with his dog Max. Green, hairy and lonely, the Grinch hates Christmas; for fifty-three years he endured it, but now he can't take it anymore. So what to do? He takes a radical decision: he will steal Christmas from ChiNonSo.

Nottetempo, he will take away all the gifts, the decorations, the happiness, and only then they will stop singing, maybe. Unlike the first version of 2000, which we talk about below, where the Grinch was played by Jim Carrey in Ron Howard's film, from 2018 we witness the return of animation, with features similar to the illustrations by Theodor Geisel, but also closer to the sense of the Christmas tradition. Recommended, as much as its predecessor which we are going to tell you about shortly.

The Grinch (2000)

The story of the green monster remains the same, but partly changes the production and the rendered on screen, starting on the release date. We are in 2000 when Jim Carrey plays the role of the Grinch, who relives, during the preparation of the celebrations, the frustrations he had to suffer as a child. He decides to take revenge by stealing all the gifts, including Christmas trees. We can almost say that, by tradition and meaning of the character, the Grinch is to American children as Pinocchio is to Italian ones.

Published in 1958 by Theodor Seuss Geisel, born in 1904 and become the most famous author of books for children in the US to the point of having sold more than 400 million books at the time of his death (1991). Seuss had never wanted to give up the rights for a film adaptation, but it only arrived in 2000. With the help of a direction that is always on the move and a set that stages a world without corners, Carrey accompanies us in a satire on consumerism blind man who does not want to moralize but only tries to restore some balance in values.

The gang of Santas

The gang of Santas is a 2010 film directed by Paolo Genovese, the eighth film starring the comic trio Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo set in Milan. The three pétanque friends form The Charlatans team, and are arrested by police during what appears to be an apartment robbery. Taken to the police station, they are accused by Commissioner Irene Bestetti of being members of the Gang of Santas, a group of thieves dressed in Santa Claus costumes who robbed eight apartments in two days. The arrested plead innocent and tell the reason why they found themselves in that situation.

The film premiered on September 26, 2010 in Milan in the East End Studios complex in Via Mecenate, in the presence of most of the cast, producers and director, while the film was released in theaters, distributed by Medusa Film, on December 17, 2010. The film received 3 nominations for the Nastri d'Argento, in Italy at the Box Office La banda dei Babbi Natale grossed € 21.4 million in the first 7 weeks of programming and € 2.6 million in the first weekend.

Dickens - The man who invented Christmas

Six months after a triumphal American tour, Charles Dickens returns to London where debts and a creative crisis await him, in search of money and inspiration. Suddenly illuminated by the fairy tales of a young Irish maid, he decides to write a Christmas story for next Christmas. The publishers, disappointed by the sales of previous books, refuse to invest in that sketch of spirits and old misers. Obstinate and passionate, Charles finds an illustrator and an alternative. In the company of his characters, he will work hard for six weeks, coming to the head of his story and ending his accounts with the past forever. The Christmas holidays are approaching and the productions are unleashing heavy artillery.

It is not a film for children, but it is perfect for bringing families together. The characters in Dickens' Christmas tale literally come to life in the narrative, coming from the innermost depths of his soul. The director starts from the author's human crisis to bring out the ghosts of a painful past. The writer moves in a Victorian London perfectly reconstructed from the sets that reveal even the darkest sides of time, showing the life of Charles, obsessed with debts and the constant requests for money from his father, and played by an excellent Jonathan Pryce.

Ice Christmas

Not a truly peaceful and cuddly atmosphere, that of Ice Christmas, directed by Paul Ziller. In this 2010 disaster movie, a huge environmental catastrophe threatens to destroy the planet forever. When the Alaskan ice begins to melt, large amounts of liquid methane begin to expand underground. The passage of these underground rivers, however, causes a series of earthquakes and tectonic movements that irremediably change the landscape and devastate everything they encounter. Geologist Michael Webster (Brendan Fehr), suddenly found without loved ones, begins a desperate struggle against time to find his family and devise a plan that can stop the violent methane channels before they annihilate humanity.

Maybe not a hit with the public, but let's give it a chance to give it a totally different color this Christmas!

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

New, enchanting version of the Nutcracker , The Nutcracker and the Four Realms mixes the fantastic tale written by ETAHoffmann in 1816 and the joyful Christmas ballet set to music by Tchaikovsky nearly a century later. Godfather Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman) is Mr. Stahlbaum's (Matthew Macfadyen) oldest and most trusted friend. Thus, like every Christmas Eve, the wealthy businessman and his daughter Clara (Mackenzie Foy) gather with the other guests in the large living room of the Drosselmeyer house, to participate in the magnificent party that the toymaker announces every year. During the usual celebrations, however, an unusual event occurs: following a golden thread that crosses the corridors of the immense mansion for fun, the young Clara is led into a magical and unknown world, divided into four enchanted realms.

Escorted by the brave soldier Philip and a band of mice, the girl crosses the whitewashed landscapes of the Land of Snowflakes, the colorful lands of the Land of Flowers and finally the "edible" villages of the Land of Sweets. She meets new friends and precious allies, including the Candy Fairy (Keira Knightley), and learns of a mission that only she can accomplish: infiltrate the hostile fourth realm, home of the evil Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren) to recover an ancient key, able to unlock a mysterious box…

Mom, I lost my plane

It was 11 October 1993 when Mom, I missed my plane debuted on the small screen, keeping an audience of over 13 million viewers glued to Canale5 in front of the adventures of a very young Macauly Culkin. The protagonist is Kevin McCallister, an eight-year-old boy who is accidentally left home alone (hence the original title Home alone), when his family moves from Chicago to Paris for the Christmas holidays. After the initial enthusiasm for the new life, the little one will end up falling at the mercy of loneliness and melancholy, and then also of fear, when a couple of thieves, actually quite clumsy, will try to break into the house to rob it. But Kevin will be able to react with courage, devising the most incredible tricks to keep the two criminals away from their home ...

The film was released in the United States on November 16, 1990, while it arrived in Italy on January 18, 1991. Only in its first programming weekend grossed $ 17 million at the American box office. The success was so great, that it remained in theaters well beyond the end of the Christmas period, stationing at number one on the chart for twelve consecutive weeks. By the time it was pulled from theaters, it had earned $ 286 million, the third highest grossing of all time in the United States to date. In the world, however, it raised over 477 million dollars, compared to only 18 million spent in production. Even in Italy, the reception of the public was exceptional, with a total income that exceeded 14 billion lire.
