PS5, Sony working to increase the resolution of games

PS5

A new patent concerning its PS5 may have leaked in advance the arrival of a completely new function. Specifically, Sony's documents reveal plans to introduce a "computer-implemented method of completing an image," but let's go into more detail: images can contain missing parts or corrupted data, and there are many processes and techniques that allow to remove these imperfections. However, current machine learning strategies can have a significant impact on performance after a certain period of time, but Sony may have found the solution.

To solve this problem, Sony's patented method would create some sort of “mask” of the displayed image, revealing some parts of it or showing others, and it would then apply modifications based on the absence of holes. Moreover, the computer would also begin to learn to better understand whether or not an empty space should be in a specific section of the image.

In essence, we are therefore talking about a technique very similar to Nvidia's DLSS, the technology of Deep Learning Super Sampling, which uses the upscale capabilities of the graphics card to improve image resolution in real time. However, the biggest difference is that Sony's method will be able to be used on both PS5 and the upcoming PS VR, of which we only know the controllers at the moment.

PSVR In fact, the patented technique will be essential to allow the virtual reality viewer to display a clean image that does not tire the eyes of the player. At the moment it is difficult to say where Sony's studies of this new technology are, but the LinkedIn profile of Andy Bigos, the company's senior principal engineer and co-inventor of the technique, reveals that he has recently "worked on the application of neural rendering and machine learning for graphics in real time on PS5 ".

In short, we just have to wait for news directly from Sony and prepare our consoles until the arrival of this technology of which, for obvious reasons , we don't know the launch period yet. Until then, we advise you to stay tuned to our pages, as new PlayStation 5 restocks may arrive soon. Also, don't forget to download free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers in November 2021.

Ranking the best upgraded PS4 games to play on the PS5

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is the hottest game console right now and for those who can get their hands on it, they can enjoy the ever-growing library of games as well as some titles that have defined the previous generation. With all that history and the amazing run PS4 had, it’s difficult to know where to start. We got you.

We’ve compiled a list of some of the best PS4 games that take advantage of the PS5’s power. Before going further, though, let’s clarify some of the terms you’ll see down the list.

There are two ways to play upgraded PS4 games on your PS5. The first one is Game Boost – you put the original disc inside the console or download the digital version. From there, you just launch the game on our PS5 and enjoy the benefits of next-gen. No need to change anything in your console’s system settings. With Game Boost you take advantage of the hardware capabilities of PS5 without having to pay for the upgrade.

The other method is simply a natural upgrade – a dedicated upgraded version of the game sold separately for the PS5. These include unique features such as ray-tracing, even faster loading times, and support for the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The features vary by game. Now you know what we’re talking about, let’s dive in.

Metro Exodus takes you down into the mud and dirt as you explore post-apocalyptic Russia and its vein-like system of tunnels and train tracks. It’s all-encompassing, pulling you into its world like a fish being hooked from a lake.

Running at a native 4K at 60fps on PS5, going back to the checkerboard 4K resolution at just 30fps on PS4 feels criminal. It’s buttery smooth.

Further to that, ray-traced global illumination and ray-traced emissive lighting give the game a haunting beauty that’s just not possible on PS4.

On top of that, it loads in a flash on PS5, and who can deny how good those DualSense adapative triggers feel? Every shot has an extra crunch when your controller mimics the tension of a weapon trigger. This makes not only your weapons feel unique from one another, but their attachments as well, in addition to other in-game mechanics such as wiping your gas mask down so you can see through the grime.

Let’s be blunt – on PS4, Control’s graphics are, at times, too heavy for the console to stomach the load. Frame drops were frequent, but with the native upgrade for PS5, all of those concerns are abolished. It’s finally under control.

Between the two graphics mode options you get, the better one is without a shred of doubt Performance Mode. But let’s start with Graphics Mode first. In it, you play at a 1440p resolution at around 30fps, but you also get flashy effects such as real-time ray-tracing. In other words, every surface has accurate reflections, which looks super cool in a game where there’s so much glass.

Switching gears to Performance Mode, you will never want to go back. Why? Because you get a native 4K resolution and an unflinching 60fps. Control‘s action sings at a higher frame rate.

Many were skeptical when they heard that the most well-known installment in the Final Fantasy franchise would be getting remade in modern style with an all-new real-time combat system, and just as many were left aghast by how well it played out in the end. It is the same for the PS5 upgrade.

As little as the new update feels on paper, once you boot up the game and hop into a fight, you immediately notice why it got its dedicated PS5 version. Jumping from an almost stagnant 30fps to double that makes it feel like playable Advent Children.

With sharper textures and smoother gameplay, PS5 is the best place to experience this reimagining of a classic.

The only PlayStation VR title on the list, Blood & Truth got a free update for PS5 players recently. It offers a boosted performance in terms of resolution – from 1440p to 4K – that makes it all the more immersive when looking through the headset, with all the details sharp and clear.

As for the frame rate, that’s better here too. On PS4, it runs at 60fps with a 120hz re-projected output on the headset. On PS5, it hits 90fps with a 90hz output, resulting in snappier responsiveness and better quality of images while performing various motions. On top of that, it boasts higher quality textures and faster loading times.

Days Gone looks almost photoreal when played with PS5’s Game Boost patch. We might not be getting a sequel any time soon, but at least you can see those mangy hordes at their best now.

It was one of the first in-house developed titles to hit a 4K resolution at 60fps with the performance patch for PS5. Not only that, but load times are down to half of what they were on the PS4. And you can get it at no extra cost when you subscribe for PS+ membership with the PS Plus Collection.

While the launch of No Man’s Sky was one of the most disastrous in the history of games, it rose from the ashes of failure and is now considered one of the best survival games around. The more time passes, the better it gets.

On PS5, that applies even more so, because of the way Hello Games has optimized the game specifically to play on the console’s strengths. At a crystal-clear 4K resolution and 60fps, it is beautiful and smooth. Throw in the improved loading times and the custom settings for the DualSense’s haptic feedback – bang, you’ve got yourself a star.

On the surface, it sounds like a decent upgrade, but when you compare it to a monstrous PC, it can even beat it. The PS5 manages to process all the updated textures and the software parameters that allow for denser foliage and critters, better animations, lighting effects, and much more. And the DualSense manages to nail it by giving you the feeling as if you are stepping on the gravel, grass, swimming in the water yourself.

Oh, and did we mention? It’s all free.

A timeless classic in a new package. Regarded as one of the best games ever, Shadow of The Colossus runs on the PS5 just as expected. The PS2 original and the remastered PS3 version were remade for PS4 specifically, as it was the first console that could take 4K and withstand its blows.

This same version, after a single patch, gets its frame rate upped and locked at 60. And oh boy, does it run like Usain Bolt when put through the PS5’s processing capabilities.

You can experience the classic tale of a nameless hero who fights his way through 16 colossi in order to save the one and only… Her. Roam through boundless landscapes, kill majestic beasts, and feel bad about it at 60fps.

One of the last games to come out at the dusk of the PS4’s lifecycle, The Last of Us Part 2 is a technical masterpiece that pushes the PS4 to its utmost limits and outshines even PS5 exclusives. The Game Boost update it received enables players to go through Ellie and Abby’s journey with a combination of 4K resolution upscaled from 1440p and silky smooth 60fps, double what the PS4 offers.

Character animations look glorious, every gunshot looks gory-ous, and it makes you want to play it more-ious. On the PS5, The Last of Us Part 2 comes to life.

Who knew the PS4 could load that fast? We certainly didn’t, but apparently, the folks at Sucker Punch Studios had figured out how to keep a game looking astonishing and load a considerable portion of its vast island in mere seconds.

Take those parameters and slap them onto a PS5 – what you get is an unparalleled open world that is blowing through frame rates like the wind itself. When it comes to combat, the change is blindingly clear – sword combat just hits different when steel clashes steel at 60fps. It’s hard to look away.

Speaking of which, the Director’s Cut that just recently came out boosts the game’s replayability value even more, giving you a whole new island to visit and the perfect excuse to jump back in.

Sony Santa Monica ripped out God of War‘s heart, wiped some of the blood off, and plunged it back into its chest when it rebooted the series on PS4. By many, it’s considered as one of the best games ever made.

Even on PS4 Pro and normal PS4 consoles, the game manages to stun with its color and lighting of Nordic-inspired locations. The Classic Performance Mode where the game ran at an upscaled 1080p resolution with between 30-60fps is just one way you can play it again on PS5. Elsewhere, there’s the Enhanced Performance Mode, giving us a 4K-checkerboard resolution and a stable 60fps.

Embark on your journey to the mountain with Kratos, now a middle-aged pops, and his son Atreus, a temperament boy, to discover the secrets of the nine realms. With a PS+ membership, you can access this generation-defining title for free on the exclusive PS Plus Collection.
