Pornhub uses AI to restore the oldest red light movies in history

Taking advantage of machine learning, Pornhub has remastered 20 erotic films from the early 1900s into color, in 4K at 60 frames per second: the project is called Remastured

(image: Pornhub) artificial intelligence has been deployed to restore old pornographic films bringing them to 4K video quality and giving them a modern look: the project is aptly called Remastured. "Ever since cinema was invented, people have started undressing in front of the cameras", announces the voiceover in a newsreel style in the presentation film of the initiative (pay attention to the link, obviously not safe for work), as the images of erotic films from the early 1900s.

It is precisely from the archives of over 125 years ago that the online porn giant went to fish for the very old black and white films. Then, taking advantage of machine learning trained on 100,000 images and videos for adults, AI has learned to color films. The black and white films thus saw their performers color themselves, giving viewers a modern semblance.

According to Pornhub, several algorithms were used to restore the films, with "limited human intervention". The process began by reducing noise and increasing image sharpness and contrast. The videos were then enhanced to be viewed in 4K at 60 frames per second and the audio was remastered or a new soundtrack was added.

The Remastured project was not only dedicated to the restoration of erotic films but also of great classics such as The Kiss, the 18 second video of the first kiss captured on film. When released in 1896 this video was denounced by viewers at the time as shocking and obscene and therefore Pornhub has given pride of place to this piece of history in its restoration project.

The Remastured library holds 20 clips. remastered spanning the period from 1896 to 1940 including a short film by legendary director Georges Méliès entitled "Apres le bal" (after the dance), a film that shows the routine of a woman who undresses and washes after a dance. For 1897, the year the short was released, the simulated nudity brought to the screen by the French director was something immoral and totally out of the ordinary.
