The final page

The author originally planned to draw Eren, Mikasa and Armin running to the tree on the hill as the subject of the final page. However, he later became uncomfortable with making it and changed it after meeting his editor and assistants.

Isayama-sensei nevertheless then realized this initial idea on the cover of the final Volume 34 °. Here it is below:

Eren and Armin

The Japanese author has read the reactions of the fans on the ending and believes that the way he drew the chapter could being misunderstood, especially in the way Armin approved of Eren's massacre, when in reality it is not. Feeling misunderstood, the Japanese author pointed out that Armin does not approve of Eren's brutal actions at all , but ultimately benefited with the end of the Giant's curse and his release with death. Again, since Eren would never be understood by anyone, Armin abandoned any counterattack thanking him for becoming a mass killer for their good.

According to the author, through this exchange of roles he tried to bring the two friends closer in the midst of what is a total tragedy.

Regrets

Finally, Isayama -sensei specified that for him the climax was complicated to draw and actually regrets not being able to express it at its best in the manga. In other words, the author thinks he has not been able to please everyone with the final chapter and apologizes to those who were disappointed.

It all happened 107 years ago. The entire human race ... except a few ... was devoured by giants. All those people ended up directly in the stomach of those beings. Thus it was that our ancestors thought of building huge walls that the giants could never cross. They managed to create a territory sheltered from the threat of the giants, but… all that until five years ago. But now it's our turn, of human beings. From now on ... we will devour the giants! Now finally mankind can take back its dignity. We can win. It is time for humanity ... to attack! “
