Ford Mustang Mach-E, which one to buy?
Announced in late 2019 as a world premiere at the Los Angeles Motor Show, Mustang Mach-E represents the link between the historic muscle cars of the American brand and the new direction taken for the greener future. Reservations for the Blue Oval battery-powered sport utility are already active in numerous markets with first deliveries expected in late 2020 and early 2021.

The Mustang Mach-E is an electric SUV medium-sized with five seats that inherits some stylistic elements of the main models of the brand; a clear example is represented by the headlights and grille found on board the muscular coupé Mustang, from which it also borrows part of the name. The new electrified car, characterized by a large and deep trunk of over 100 liters, measures 4.7 meters in length with a wheelbase of approximately 3 meters.

Infotainment

On board Mustang Mach-E debuts a revamped version of Ford Sync that benefits from a more powerful processor, an advanced voice assistant, self-learning artificial intelligence and finally over-the-air updates. Ford Sync works as a true all-round application capable of configuring every aspect of your car, even from the comfort of your smartphone. The telephone can also be used as a key to open the door (Phone as a key). On the Mach-E there is an imposing 15 "vertical display compatible with multi-touch interaction, completely similar to that found on smartphones.

In addition, Ford has planned a number of over-the-air updates. Currently limited only to infotainment, in the future it will be possible to intervene on every aspect of the car: from the electronic management of the powertrain to the driving aid systems. Among the functions present there are also those specific and dedicated to electric mobility, necessary to program the car recharge and accurately organize your trip.

Two batteries, two drive variants

The range currently consists of the Standard Range and Extended Range versions, combined with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. The lithium-ion batteries, positioned under the car floor and constantly monitored, have a capacity of 75.7 and 98.8 kWh respectively. On all versions, the warranty for the batteries is 8 years and 160,000 km. The charging system includes the installation of a wallbox by Ford Connected capable of providing up to 51 km of range per hour. With the standard cable, on the other hand, charging is limited to 35 km per hour. The use of public systems with a higher output, up to 150 kW, on the other hand, provide up to 93 km of autonomy every 10 minutes. The two charging cables as standard, the one for the columns (6 meters) and the home one (6.7 meters) support a maximum of 32 A.

Engines

The manufacturer has foreseen different power steps so as to meet the needs of its large clientele. The entry-level rear-wheel drive variant guarantees 269 HP / 196 Kw, while the one with extended range reaches 294 HP / 216 Kw. By choosing the four-wheel drive versions with dual engines, the range consists of 269 HP / 196 Kw (SR) and 351 HP / 258 Kw (ER) models. Ford also plans a fifth and new model, known as the Mach-E GT, capable of providing up to 465 HP / 630 Kw of power.

All variants allow you to select the driving modes Active, Whisper and Untamed which affect the response of the engine, steering and the engine's virtual sound reproduction system. Traveling in Active mode, the one selected by default, the car gives limited power to the advantage of consumption, while in Whisper mode the driver will perceive a gradual increase in power and softer steering management. In Untamed mode (“wild” and known as Unbridled in the American market), the steering is more precise and heavier with more aggressive regenerative braking. The braking system features a Brembo Flexira system with aluminum calipers, available in red on some trim levels.

Which variant?

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the range is divided into the Italian market of two configurable versions with as many options:

Model Drive Battery Declared autonomy WLTP Power List price Ford Mustang Mach-E SR RWD 75.7 kWh 440 Km 269 HP / 196 Kw 49.900 Euro Ford Mustang Mach-E ER RWD 98.8 kWh 610 Km 294 CV / 216 Kw 57.950 Euro Ford Mustang Mach-E SR AWD 75.7 kWh 400 Km 269 CV / 196 Kw 57.500 Euro Ford Mustang Mach-E ER AWD 98.8 kWh 540 Km 351 CV / 258 Kw 66.850 Euro Ford Mustang Mach-E GT AWD 88.8 kWh 380 Km 487 HP / 358 Kw Coming The increase in the battery is measurable in about 30% between the SR and ER models: a certainly significant figure. The entry-level version of the Mustang Mach-E is the SR RWD (75.7 kWh battery) capable of ensuring up to 440 km of declared range, a slightly higher figure than the more expensive variant with four-wheel drive. If we consider autonomy as the most important key aspect in choosing an electrified car, it is quite clear that the two SR variants are the least intriguing. The ER models, on the other hand, are characterized by a larger battery and a more performing engine, thus ensuring longer mileage. Thanks to the presence of the four-wheel drive which weighs on the weight of the car, the increase in performance is not as linear as one might expect.

Although autonomy can represent a decidedly important aspect in the choice of an electric vehicle, it should be noted that among the various available configurations there are some aesthetic and functional differences that affect the final price of the car. A clear example is the light signature, partially LED in the RWD model and instead completely new generation in the four-wheel drive variant.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for a greater sprint and do not have particular spending limits, it is recommended to purchase the AWD variant - with all-wheel drive - always with a 98.8 kWh battery at a price of 66,850 euros.

All variants are available and configurable on the official Ford Italia website. For the most demanding, we recommend waiting for the presentation in Italy of the GT variant, that is the electric version of the more famous Mustang GT, characterized by a 487 HP and 860 Kw powertrain with 88 kWh battery. This model will be able to burn 0-100 in just 3.7 seconds and reach a (limited) top speed of 200km / h.
