OnlyFans backs off on the porn block

Dietrofront of the platform on the decision to exclude sexually explicit content after the rain of criticism from users and sex workers and the risk of escape of subscribers

It might sound this (odd) way to many of OnlyFans' sudden backtrack on its recent decision to ban sexually explicit content - read porn - from the subscription platform, known worldwide for hosting mostly adult photos and videos.

The company announced yesterday with a couple of tweets that it had the necessary guarantees and that it wants to continue to be a home for any type of creator. "Thank you for making your voices heard" wrote OnlyFans on his profile.

Thank you to everyone for making your voices heard.

We have secured assurances necessary to support our diverse creator community and have suspended the planned October 1 policy change.

OnlyFans stands for inclusion and we will continue to provide a home for all creators.

A spokesperson for OnlyFans told The Verge that the porn blockade scheduled for October 1 will not be triggered, after reassurance from banks that first lobbied the site to more stringently regulate content.

Strangely, this change of plans comes one day after the statement by the CEO, Tim Stokely, who in an interview with the Financial Times, had explained that the company had no choice and that the reason for the ban was precisely the problems with the partners. banking companies.

Stokely had stated that banks such as Bny Mellon, Jp Morgan Chase and Metro Bank were reluctant to link to a site with explicit and pornographic content, also due to the possible legal implications. The OnlyFans boss added that the decision to quit porn was made to protect the creators 'subscriptions and earnings.

In fact, many creators and sex workers were disappointed and harshly criticized OnlyFans' choice of eliminate porn, after their content contributed to the success of the platform.

OnlyFans is not the same site as a year and a half ago. In 2019 it had 120 thousand creators, at the end of 2020 - thanks to the pandemic - these were 1 million and 90 million subscribers. Thanks largely to sex workers, the site generated $ 2 billion in sales, on which OnlyFans retains a 20% stake.

After the announcement of the ban on porn content, some creators had already started removing their own content and in some cases to leave the platform. However, this belated backtrack may not be enough to hold back many sex workers. Those who have felt betrayed and those who are afraid that a ban of this type cannot be excluded in the future are already looking around.
