Magic: the Gathering, Jeff Kline will replace the Russo brothers in the Netflix series

Magic: the Gathering, Jeff Kline will replace the Russo brothers in the Netflix series

Magic

Netflix’s CG-animated adaptation of Magic: The Gathering will have a new creative team led by executive producer Jeff Kline (Transformers: Prime, found here on Netflix). The animated project was originally announced in 2019 and would be led by Joe and Anthony Russo.

Magic: the Gathering, from the abandonment of the Russo brothers to Jeff Kline

According to Deadline sources, the Russos and their team, including writers Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina, left early in the process with different visions on how to best fit IP. The split was amicable, and Netflix subsequently contacted Jeff Kline to oversee the creation of an entirely new storyline for the Planeswalkers, the only Magic heroes and villains capable of using magic.

The Kline team includes co-executive producer and story editor Steve Melching (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), assistant director Audu Paden, art director Izzy Medrano, and screenwriters Nicole Dubuc, Russell Sommer & Dan Frey and Taneka Stotts. The Russo brothers were involved in the transition and also met Jeff Kline, who expressed his gratitude to the Russo brothers for introducing him to the world of Magic: The Gathering.

For the 'TV adaptation of Magic, Netflix in 2019 partnered with Hasbro, the toy and game maker, and Wizards of the Coast, the Seattle-based company that publishes both the Magic card game and Dungeons & Dragons. Hasbro, which has owned Wizards of the West Coast since 1999, subsequently acquired the indie studio Entertainment One, which will produce the series.

eOne, Wizards of the Coast and Netflix all said in a joint statement:

Even though the Russo brothers are no longer part of the animated series, their passion for the game, combined with their initial creative perspective and input, helped us shape the project in a way that which we believe that fans of the game and new fans of the 'Gathering Universe' will enjoy the series and discover what millions of fans around the world have known for 25 years already.

Animation will be done by Snowball Studios , which will then replace the originally announced Bardel Studio. If you are a fan of Magic: The Gathering and are looking for themed card sets and collectibles, take a look at this rich page on Amazon for your purchases!
