Emmy 2022: the nominations, the surprises and the disappearance of traditional TV

Emmy 2022

The 2022 Emmy nominations have been revealed in the past few hours and TV fans have a lot to think about. In fact, as never before this year, these nominations can tell a lot about the state of American television, but also about the TV Academy that has formulated these shortlists. First of all, it is striking how, in the over 500 series produced last year, we focused on a very small handful of titles: Succession (back after a year off), Ted Lasso and The White Lotus were the most nominated, with 25 , 20 and 20 nominations respectively. Hacks, Only Muders in the Building, Euphoria, Barry, Dopesick, Scissione and of course Squid Game (with five of his nominees in the main actor categories) were also stocked up.

All these titles, none excluded, they come either from cable TV like Hbo, but above all from streaming like Apple Tv +, Hulu / Disney + and Netflix. The only series that this year comes from the so-called network television, or those traditional channels that are a decade ago still dominated this type of awards, is Abbott Elementary, which airs on ABC in the United States (instead we debuted directly on Disney +). This sunset of the dear old national networks then speaks eloquently also through absences considered by many to be inexplicable, such as the last season of This Is Us, broadcast in the United States on Nbc, completely snubbed (together with his actress Mandy Moore, who many they gave as certain among the best actresses). The same fate befell ABC's Black-ish, one of the most acclaimed and appreciated series overseas.

Many superhero series, such as Loki, Moon Knight and Peacemaker were considered for technical aspects but ignored in the main categories, and the same happened to The Book of Boba Fett. Another excellent absence is also surprising, that of Yellowstone, one of the most sensational TV successes of the stars and stripes. In other cases, many have reiterated how often, and also in these Emmys 2022, the members of the Tv Academy vote on automatic pilot: despite being crushed by critics, the last season of Killing Eve managed to secure nominations for its protagonists Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh; In the best of variety shows, Dave LaChapelle received his fifth consecutive nomination despite the furious controversy surrounding his stand up comedy. Then one wonders how it is possible that actresses like Selena Gomez (Only Murders), Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone) or Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) have remained without nominations, and the same goes for series like The Good Fight, Atlanta or Reservation Dogs.

But on the other hand this is the Emmys game every year, baby. Here are the main nominations for the 2022 edition:
