iPhone 13: release, price, news and rumors about new Apple models

iPhone 13

For fans of the Apple world, the month of September is constantly associated with the arrival of the new iPhones. The Cupertino-based company has been following this roadmap for the launch of its smartphones for years, despite some recent delays due to production problems.

This year things seem to have gone as expected, in fact just in the past hours Apple has officially confirmed the presentation event set for September 14, 2021 (9 pm in Italy): on this occasion we will probably not only see the new iPhone 13, but there will also be space to unveil Apple Watch Series 7, launch the new operating systems and perhaps announce a revamped iPad Mini.

The "California streaming" title of the event is rather peculiar and could hide some other reference to the products or services that will take the stage at Apple Park (unfortunately again this year without the presence of the public). We do not yet know if Apple will decide to call the new smartphones "iPhone 13" or "iPhone 12s" (the latter actually seems the most likely nomenclature). For convenience in this article we will call the new iPhone 13 models in order to better distinguish them from the last lineup.

We know you like surprises, but if you can't wait a few more days, we want to anticipate the features of the iPhones 13, based on the rumors of the past months, considered very reliable. We will therefore go and see what are the main innovations, how much the new models will cost and when they will be released on the market.

When is iPhone 13 coming out?

Apple CEO Tim Cook presents the new iPhones After setting the appointment for the presentation event, the release date for the new iPhone 13 seems to be now certain. Typically, Apple announces the new iPhone models and then releases them about ten days later. So what we expect is that the iPhone 13 will arrive in stores on September 24, 2021 with the possibility of pre-ordering them as early as September 21. Of course, there have been exceptions in the past like last year when, due to the pandemic, Apple released the iPhone 12 a month late.

There shouldn't be any major production problems this year or the assembly of Apple smartphones, so we should experience a "traditional" launch at the end of September. For many years now Italy has been included in the list of countries that will receive the new iPhones first without having to wait any longer.

How much does iPhone 13 cost?

The alleged new color of iPhone 13 Pro: Bronze This year we expect a lineup very similar to that seen twelve months ago with the iPhone 12. Overall, therefore, we will see four models that will stand out in terms of features and price. The cost to take home the new iPhone 13 should remain almost the same as that of the iPhone 12. The global chip crisis, however, could slightly increase the price of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini model. Basically we expect a price list of the iPhone 13 that should not deviate too much from the following list:

iPhone 13 mini: starting from € 839 iPhone 13: starting from € 939 iPhone 13 Pro: starting from € 1,189 iPhone 13 Pro Max: starting from € 1,289

We do not yet know what memory cuts will be available. Also in this case they are likely to remain unchanged compared to the iPhone 12, so with 64/128/256 GB for the iPhone 13 and 13 mini models and 128/256/512 GB for the Pro models. Many argue that this year, for the first time, there will also be a 1 TB variant on the Pro models, never seen before on the iPhone.

Design

The front / back design of the new iPhone 13 After renewing the design with last year's iPhones 12, we don't expect to see any particular changes in the upcoming new models. The iPhones 13 will keep the same rectangular design with pronounced edges. The body and dimensions will therefore remain almost identical, although there could be an increase of about 0.26 mm in thickness due to the combined use of larger sensors for cameras and a larger battery.

It has therefore been confirmed the presence of four models, which stand out in terms of design for their size and screen size, in particular:

iPhone 13 mini with 5.4-inch display iPhone 13 with 6-inch display, 1-inch iPhone 13 Pro with 6.1-inch display iPhone 13 Pro Max with 6.4-inch display

Reduced notch

Another small change in terms of design is related to the notch. Apple has repositioned the audio capsule next to the Face ID sensors, moving it upwards to the edge of the smartphone frame. In this way it managed to reduce the size of the notch by about 30%, giving more space to extend the screen even in the upper corners.

There are also some differences in terms of design referring to the camera module and the available colors which we will discuss in the next paragraphs.

Display

Notch with reduced dimensions on iPhone 13 In 2020 Apple introduced OLED screens for the first time on the entire iPhone 12 line. the same will happen this year with the iPhone 13, which, however, will enjoy an awaited novelty. According to the latest rumors, Apple will finally mount displays with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Most likely this novelty will be exclusive to the Pro models, but we do not feel we can completely rule out the arrival on the other iPhone 13.

As has been happening for years on the iPad, it will be the iPhone itself that decides when we will need the refresh rate of 120 Hz in order to guarantee a good autonomy of the device. In addition, the displays will be equipped with LTPO technology (seen for the first time on Apple Watch Series 4) in order to minimize consumption.

Always taking inspiration from Apple smartwatches, this year the always display could also debut -on on the entire iPhone 13 line. In this way we will always be able to keep an eye on the clock, the battery charge level and some notifications in the lockscreen.

There will be no Touch ID integrated below the iPhone display, as there will be Face ID as the only unlocking system.

Performance

The A15 Bionic processor present in the new iPhone 13 For years the iPhone has remained the undisputed leader in performance compared to other smartphones. With the iPhone 12, Apple has adopted the 5 nanometer manufacturing process in its A14 Bionic chips, taking performance to another level. In the iPhone 13, we expect to see a slight improvement in this TSMC-designed technology. In particular, the new construction technique has been defined with the acronym 5nm + and improves the power with the same consumption to increase the autonomy of the device. Apple's chosen name for its next chip will likely be A15 Bionic. Despite many rumors and rumors, we can say that we will not see the M1 chip in the iPhone 13.

On the connectivity front we will see a 5G modem updated to support mmWave 5G. This feature was already present in the iPhone 12, but exclusively for the US models. This year, however, it could debut worldwide with the gradual expansion of the 5G infrastructure.

Camera

The new design of the rear camera module of the iPhone 13 The design of the cameras on the body rear could receive a major change. Recent rumors have shown that the three sensors of the Pro models will be covered with a single glass to make it look like a single lens. Furthermore, Pro models will always have the same set of lenses and sensors, unlike last year when iPhone 12 Pro Max had small advantages such as better stabilization and a 2.5x optical zoom.

In particular the ultra-wide camera will be updated from 5P (f / 2.4) with fixed focus (FF) to 6P (f / 1.8) with autofocus (AF). The LiDAR sensor will always remain an exclusive of the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, as well as the third lens for optical zoom.

iPhone 13 and 13 mini will keep a similar design of their predecessors along with the same lenses already seen last year (perhaps with some minor improvements). Instead, the arrangement of the lenses changes and they will no longer be placed vertically one below the other but the lower one will be moved to the right. All models should enjoy a new "Portrait Mode" for videos, which will offer the same bokeh effect already seen in photos even in movies with the ability to adjust the depth and level of blur of the background.

The "Astrophotography" mode will also arrive to capture beautiful images of the starry sky and the Moon.

Battery

iPhone 13 will have a battery with a better capacity than iPhone 12 With the increase of the thickness of the body, Apple wanted to insert a larger battery in the iPhone 13. In particular, the batteries will have the following capacities:

iPhone 13 mini: 2,406 mAh (against the 2,277 mAh of the iPhone 12 mini) iPhone 13: 3,095 mAh (against the 2,805 mAh of the iPhone 12) iPhone 13 Pro : 3.095 mAh (against the iPhone 12 Pro's 2.805 mAh) iPhone 13 Pro Max: 4.325 mAh (against the iPhone 13 Pro's 3.687 mAh)

This increase in capacity will not necessarily lead to battery life improvements , as there will be hardware innovations such as the 120 Hz display, which will undoubtedly consume more power. Instead, the device will be charged via Lightning cable which will go from 18 to 25 W.

The same should happen to wireless charging via MagSafe with a slight increase in maximum charging Watts, thanks to a better dissipation system of heat. The MagSafe cable could also arrive in Lightning format for safe charging of the device even via cable.

Colors

The possible new colors of the iPhone 13 Often when Apple does not introduce important changes at the level design presents many new colors to distinguish the new models from the previous ones. Even the iPhone 13 should enjoy this novelty, certainly appreciated by those who like to show off their smartphone without the use of covers. In particular, we talked about the new Matt Black color coming for iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, which will give a look more similar to deep black and different from the now classic "Space Gray".

In addition, Apple wants to introduce the Bronze color for the first time, always exclusively for the Pro line of the iPhone 13.

As for the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, these will have a greater variety of colors with the probable arrival of the orange and pink finish. The most popular colors of the last generation such as Pacific Blue, Graphite and Green will probably return. However, we will see the final lineup only during the presentation event where we will discover all the official colors of the iPhone 13.
