Diablo 2: Resurrected: Switch version in the video graphics comparison

Diablo 2

How good Diablo 2: Resurrected would look was clear long before the release: We were able to play the new edition extensively in the playable alpha and beta versions, which resulted in several graphic comparisons and reports. Blizzard has so far largely kept the switch implementation under lock and key. Bad omen? For our test, we have now spent more than 15 hours implementing the switch and are giving us an assessment. There is also a series of pictures on which we compare the graphics with the PC version. It quickly becomes clear which compromises were necessary in order to be able to play the remaster on the go.

Update: The article now also includes a video graphics comparison

Good playability

First things first: Diablo 2: Resurrected also cuts a fine figure on the Nintendo Switch. The gameplay is identical to the other versions, only with online multiplayer there is one restriction: While you can play on PC, Xbox and Playstation consoles with up to 8 players, the Switch version is limited online to up to 4 players. During our playing time, the performance was pleasing, most of the time 30 frames per second were achieved, which is enough for smooth gaming - regardless of whether in TV or handheld mode. The well thought-out gamepad control slips just as well as on PS5 or Xbox Series X, the only restriction here: The cool zoom function from the PC version is unfortunately not available. But that seems to be missing in all console versions. At least we weren't able to discover it.

Cross-Save? Functions!

As announced, all versions of Diablo 2: Resurrected offer a cross-save function. This allows you to transfer your score to other platforms, but it must be an online character. So offline heroes are not allowed to move. On the other hand, the hero transfer is very pleasant. When you start it for the first time, all you have to do is connect your Nintendo account to your Battle.net account: all you have to do is go to a website, log in with your Battle.net details and enter a code - that's it. Your online heroes are then automatically saved on Blizzard's servers and can be played on another device without any problems.

The next morning everything was fine, we were able to log in without any problems and play online on all platforms, this also applies to the Switch.

How well are the graphics doing?

It shouldn't surprise anyone: For the Switch version, Blizzard had to noticeably tweak the graphics quality in order to maintain a reasonably stable frame rate. All of the textures are much less detailed than on the other platforms, and there are no pretty environmental details such as grass or some decorative objects. As a result, some locations - for example the burning Tristram - appear a bit bare than in the other versions. In the third act, the level of detail of the jungle environment was slightly reduced, so the foliage of the trees is not as dense as on the PC, and the vegetation is not animated, which is hardly noticeable in normal game play.

On the next comparison of images easy to see: the PC version already shows a slightly larger image section than the switch version in 1080p. This also applies to the Xbox and Playstation versions.

The fire effects are also less detailed compared to the PC. In addition, the resolution on the Nintendo Switch is also lower in docked mode than in the other versions, which means that the picture generally looks a bit muddy. However, what is happening is always easy to read and the writing can still be recognized properly in handheld mode. Compared to the PC version, the switch implementation is significantly lighter, which is due to the greatly reduced shadows and the lack of surrounding obscuration. In this example (below) you can see the difference particularly clearly on the fountain. You have to accept such compromises, here Blizzard has clearly given preference to the frame rate - the right decision. In contrast to the PC, the loading times are noticeably longer, but usually only a few seconds are required on the switch. So that's not a problem. The completely newly rendered videos also look great in the switch version.

How do you rate Diablo 2: Resurrected?

With graphical cuts and only 30 frames per second, the switch implementation is clearly the weakest version of Diablo 2: Resurrected. However, this hardly harms the fun, because the action RPG is also playable on the Switch and has all the strengths that also characterize the other console versions. This also applies to the handheld mode, in which the game also cuts a fine figure.

Activision Blizzard has already drawn the first steps, several leading developers had to vacate their posts.
