PlayStation 5 seems to be getting a minor hardware revision this week

Reports are coming in that Sony has released a minor hardware revision on new PlayStation 5 consoles from this week.

It was first reported by Australian outlet Press Start, noting that the most recent stock of the console sported a new serial number. Further investigation revealed this new model is 300 grams lighter, and features a new screw for the base stand unit. While the previous one required a screwdriver, the new one can be adjusted by hand.

A few hours later, Eurogamer reported that UK users that are receiving their consoles this week also appear to have the new screw. It’s a very minor update, and there’s currently no word on how the console has lost the excess weight, though it’s expected certain internal parts have been replaced to make them lighter.

There’s been no official word from Sony about the new hardware at the time of writing. As a result, we don’t think there’s any major changes to report — we will of course, update this story if we hear otherwise. But it’s good to note that Sony don’t seem to be shying away of tweaking the hardware as it deems appropriate.

It’s entirely possible that these small changes are related to what has given Sony the confidence to say they hope to sell 22.6 million consoles by March 2022. Demand certainly shows no sign of slowing down, with the PlayStation 5 recently hitting 10 million sales on its way becoming the most successful PlayStation console of all time.
