‘Pokemon Go’: How to get most from Friendship Day and ‘New Pokemon Snap’ event

Niantic is wrapping up April with a series of events in the last week. That kicks off this Saturday with Friendship Day, a new event that rewards players who have nurtured partnerships through the game over the past months or even years.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 24, players will notice a triple catch XP bonus and three-hour lures. Because friendships cross borders, the other perks for the event have apparently already started.

The trade distance has been increased to 40km. If you have friends that live in the next city over, it’s the perfect time to use that Lucky Trade or get rid of rare Pokemon that have been taking up storage space.

The best part of Friendship Day is that there’s a higher chance of receiving a Lucky Pokemon in a trade. These are Pokemon that take less stardust to power up and they also have higher stats than a normal trade. That bonus will last until 5 p.m.

Along with those perks, players will also see more grass-type Pokemon in the wild during that window. They are the following:

Bulbasaur (shiny available)Oddish (shiny available)Bellsprout (shiny available)Alolan Exeggutor (shiny available)Tangela (shiny available)Chikorita (shiny available)Sunkern (shiny available)Treecko (shiny available)Turtwig (shiny available)Snivy (shiny available)ShroomishBreloomCacneaCacturneSewaddleCottoneePetililFoongusChespin

Players will need to collect some of these for the Friendship Day Collection Challenge, which rewards players with 175,000 XP. With Niantic fixing the Lucky Egg bug, it’d be smart to use them during the event to boost experience points even more. That’s going to be more important as players climb the ranks to reach level 50.

PICTURE THISTo celebrate the April 30 release of “New Pokemon Snap” on Nintendo Switch, Niantic is holding an event inspired by the game. From 10 a.m. April 29 to 8 p.m. May 2, Pokemon that live in the Lental region will be appearing in the wild.

Because “New Pokemon Snap” is a spin-off and not a new game in the main series, the Lental Region won’t have any new pocket monsters. Pokemon that have already been released will show up such Lotad, Cacnea and Ducklett. When it comes to raids, players will find Vaporeon, Meganium and Trapinch ready to fight at gyms. Those are Pokemon that also appear in the game. Players will also encounter photo-themed Field and Timed research tasks.

That’s all fine and good, but the real star of the event is the debut of shiny Smeargle. This Pokemon will be photobombing players more often, but more importantly, the new variant will be available for this event. Smeargle will only appear a limited number of times. I suspect it will be perhaps five photobombs a day. Trainers will know what the Smeargle is shiny by its red tail. Beyond the event, it won’t appear regularly but players could encounter it during future events, according to Niantic.

TROUBLE IS BACKLastly, after a brief hiatus because of a bug, Team Go Rocket is back in “Pokemon Go.” To make up for the lost time, Niantic gave away a free box that contained a Rocket Radar and 30 Pokeballs. Players will also have more time to catch Shadow Zapdos. The encounter will go from midnight June 1 until midnight June 17.
