Twitter explains the transition from Trump to Biden
With just a few hours left for the inauguration of the new President of the United States, known as Inauguration Day 2021, Twitter has detailed how government accounts will transition from the old to the new administration. The company led by Jack Dorsey wants to be as clear and transparent as possible towards users who use the social network to follow political events.

Twitter and the switch of institutional accounts

How made in 2017, on the occasion of Trump's election, Twitter has been working with the government for several weeks to facilitate the transfer of accounts to new owners. First, current accounts will be transferred to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), where tweets and history will remain publicly available. Also the usernames will be updated to reflect the new status. For example, the former President's @POTUS account will become @ POTUS45.

Twitter will then transfer all institutional accounts: @ Transition46 will become @WhiteHouse (White House), @PresElectBiden will become @POTUS, @ SenKamalaHarris will become @VP (Vice President), @FLOTUSBiden will become @FLOTUS (First Lady) and @PressSecPsaki will become @PressSec (White House Spokesperson).

Folks - This will be the account for my official duties as President. At 12:01 PM on January 20th, it will become @POTUS. Until then, I'll be using @JoeBiden. And while you're here, follow @FLOTUSBiden @SenKamalaHarris @SecondGentleman and @ Transition46.

- President-elect Biden (@PresElectBiden) January 15, 2021

Tweets, history and followers will switch from the previous account to the new one, while the followers of the accounts managed by the previous administration will be removed. Affected users will receive an in-app notification, so they can start following the new administration's accounts.

There will be something new to the transition from Obama to Trump. Twitter created the new @SecondGentleman account for the Vice President's husband (Douglas Emhoff). The @SecondLady account of former Vice President Mike Pence's wife will be archived as @ SecondLady45. The ceremony on January 20th can be followed through the @JCCIC and @BidenInaugural accounts.
