What is Demon Slayer? Brief retrospective on the work of Koyoharu Gotōge

Demon Slayer , whose original title is Kimetsu no Yaiba (literally "The blade of the ammazzademoni"), is a manga, concluded, written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotōge; was serialized for the first time in Japan on Weekly Shōnen Jump, of the Shūeisha publishing group, from February 15, 2016 to May 18, 2020. In Italy, the Demon Slayer manga has been published by Star Comic since April 10, 2019 and is still ongoing . Very little is known about the author, to the point that, for some time, we weren't even sure of her gender, and even her face is a mystery, but we do know that she was born on May 5, 1989 .

Thanks to the enormous success of Demon Slayer , the animation studio Ufotable ( Puella Magi Madoka Magika – The story of the rebellion , God Eater ) has created, starting from April 6, 2019, the animation series and the film Demon Slayer the Movie: The Mugen Train (here you find our review), based on the original manga. Furthermore, thanks to her work, in February 2021 Gotouge was included in the annual list of the 100 most influential people of the well-known Time magazine, thus becoming the first mangaka to obtain this recognition.

Demon Slayer: the main characters

Without going into too much detail of the plot of Demon Slayer , the narrative starts from the dramatic extermination of the family of Tanjiro and Nezuko by the demons. However, Tanjiro discovers that his sister was not spared, but she was turned into a demon. Demons usually attack humans uncontrollably, but Nezuko somehow manages to keep some of her humanity in order to control herself.

Usually, demons lacking in reason are simply killed, but Nezuko is different, special: Tanjiro's goal is therefore to find a way to save his little sister, now his last family bond left alive. Thus, the two set off on the road; However, Nezuko is hidden inside a trunk that Tanjiro carries on her shoulders, to avoid unnecessary confusion, should they see him in the company of a demon. During their journey, the two brothers will meet other characters, some of whom will join them to go in search of the "leader" of all demons, Muzan Kibutsuji and his waxing and waning moons. In Demon Slayer, the demon lord has a sire-like role for vampires: by killing him, who created all other demons, they too should cease to exist. Tanjiro is therefore animated by the hope that, once Kibutsuji is killed, his sister Nezuko will be able to return to normal.

Although Demon Slayer is very reminiscent of the narrative structure of InuYasha by Rumiko Takahashi, the author said she was inspired by several other authors and manga: Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Tite Kubo's Bleach, Hideaki Sorachi's Gintama and Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto.

Demon Slayer : who are the Waxing Moons and Waning Moons

As mentioned above, the demon lord Muzan Kibutsuji, who lives among ordinary people posing as a of them, he makes use of the collaboration of very powerful demons that he created himself, through his blood. The Moons are 12 in all, 6 Waxing and 6 Waning, and have different characteristics and power levels: for this reason, they are divided into two categories. The hierarchy is structured simply according to the power of each Moon, although it's not as rigid as it might seem. Each Moon has a number engraved inside one of its eyes, which indicates its position in the hierarchy: it starts from number 6, which indicates the least powerful Moon, up to number 1. Kibutsuji therefore thought of creating a sort of "ranking" of his strongest demons, structured as follows:

Waning Moons: numbered from 6 (slightly more powerful than a common demon) to 1 (the strongest among the Waning Moons), they form the first front of defense for demons.

Waxing Moons: Much more powerful than Waning Moons, Waxing Moons are also numbered from 1 to 6, with number 1 being the strongest.

We will not mention in what are or have been the waxing and waning Moons up to this moment, but their distinctive trait is that no Moon can be sure of maintaining its place in the demonic hierarchy: this "ranking" is in fact subject to change, like the sports rankings, for which, for example, a waning moon that proves able i dealing with a Demon Slayer would climb his rankings. Precisely because of this sort of meritocratic system, the Moons, especially the Waning Moons, work very hard to demonstrate their value to Kibutsuji: in this, perhaps, they could finally be promoted to Waxing Moons, and thus also see their power further amplified thanks to a "boost" of blood from their lord.

Demon Slayer : order of vision

Before reaching the heart of this article, or the salient information regarding Demon Slayer 3 , the airing date of the first episode of the new season, the trailer and where to view the series, a last, small note regarding the viewing order of Demon Slayer .

As you probably already know, Japanese animated series are often enriched by animated films, which can be inserted within the main narrative, because they adapt one or more narrative arcs of the original manga (in this case, we are talking about canonical films), or ch and, instead, show side stories not present in the original manga and disconnected from the main story line (for example, the first Dragon Ball Z films with Broly were not canon for years, because the character was not present in the manga).

So, what is the viewing order to follow to have a complete and organic overview of the animated versions of Demon Slayer ? Here it is:

Demon Slayer 1 , the first season of the anime, which consists of 26 episodes ; Demon Slayer – The Mugen Train , a canonical film that continues the narrative from the point where Demon Slayer 1 ends; Demon Slayer 2 , the second season of the anime, consisting of 18 episodes ; Demon Slayer 3, the new season of the upcoming anime. Going into more detail, here are the narrative arcs of the manga covered by each chapter of the manga, each season and the first film of the animated series. Demon Slayer 3 : which narrative arc will it adapt?

As for the narrative arc that we will see in Demon Slayer 3 , it will be that of the Village of Swordsmen . In the manga, this story arc covers chapters 100 to 127, but, at the current time, we still don't know how many episodes in total Demon Slayer 3 will consist of. Without going too much into the details of the plot of this new narrative arc, we can say that it will focus on Tanjiro and his sword: having been heavily damaged during the previous clashes, Tanjiro will go to a village of swordsmen to have it repaired. Naturally, the demons will not stand idly by…

Tanjiro will be joined by Genya, another demon hunter like him, in the battles that will see him as the protagonist of this arc, which also introduces new enemies .

Director Haruo Sotozaki and Ufotable studio character designer and head of animation Akira Matsushima, along with the main cast, will return to their respective roles for the new season of the anime.
