Nintendo Switch dominates hardware and software sales in Japan in the first quarter of 2021

Famitsu released overall sales figures for gaming hardware and software in Japan in the first quarter of 2021, demonstrating once again the absolute dominance of the Nintendo Switch over the competition, in a situation that seems almost monopoly.

From the hardware point of view, things are a little better for Sony, which managed to place 325,061 PS5 sold in Q1 2021 and almost 60,000 PS4, while Microsoft with Xbox Series X | S continues to fail to penetrate the Japanese market remaining under the 10,000 units sold in the first quarter of the year.

Nintendo Switch is still on another planet, having sold 1.7 million consoles out of a total of 2.1 million consoles from game, as we see in the Q1 2021 hardware sales chart:

Nintendo Switch - 1,744,974 PlayStation 5 - 325,061 PlayStation 4 - 59,889 Xbox Series X / S - 8,585 Nintendo 3DS - 9,368

However, the dom inio true of Nintendo Switch on the competition emerges above all from the software data. It is true that we only talk about the physical retail market in the ranking below, while for PS4 and PS5 sales have probably moved a lot to digital even in Japan, but the results are impressive:

The annihilation of the competition clearly emerges from a simple pie chart showing the market shares in the hands of the various consoles regarding the videogame software market in Japan:
