According to Terna data, the company that manages the national electricity grid, in the seven months of summer time of 2020, Italy saved a total of 400 million kilowatt hours of electricity, equal to the average annual consumption of about 150,000 households, with a benefit economic for the system of 66 million euros and positive impacts also in terms of environmental sustainability, with 205 thousand less tons of CO 2 emitted into the atmosphere.

From 2004 to 2020, according to Terna's analysis, the lower electricity consumption for the country due to summer time was approximately 10 billion kilowatt hours overall and resulted in savings for citizens of 1 billion and 720 million euros in economic terms.

The issue of costs and benefits is always at the center of the discussion, with a view to moving from a natural time to a legal one, established by convention. In Europe, the transition from winter to summer time is common to the member states, which have introduced it a little in random order on their own, passing only later to a coordinated harmonization process within the community. And the decision is still debated today, with very different perspectives on advantages and disadvantages.

Already in 2007 a Commission report tried to make a point on the "implications of summer time" in the states of the Union, looking at also to the size of the common market and the repercussions on the most affected economic sectors. On the contribution of summer time, various parameters were observed, including "the greater consumption of energy for heating at the beginning of the day" or "the greater consumption of fuel due to a possible increase in traffic in the evenings when there is more light" . 2020 should have marked a final decision by the Commission on the use of summer time in Europe, but due to the pandemic the discussion was postponed.
