Call of Duty: Warzone: Activation of Season 2 Reloaded is pending, update reduces file size

Call of Duty

The Season 2 Reloaded update is already available for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, but the Warzone update is still a bit long in coming: It will be activated on March 31 at 8 a.m. In a recent blog entry, the developers announce fundamental changes to the file size of Warzone and Modern Warfare. "Those who own the full version of Modern Warfare / Warzone or who have the free-to-play Warzone will find on their respective platforms that the game now leaves a smaller footprint in the form of storage space," said the blog post on the Call of Duty website.

Means: Both Call of Duty: Warzone (buy now € 8.90) and Modern Warfare require less space on your hard drive after downloading the Season 2 update. The developers promise "improvements for the whole content management system". The optimizations are made possible by data optimization and streamlining of the content packages, which are necessary for the individual game modes. In order for the changes to take effect, an extensive download of around 50 gigabytes is required. "The update is necessary to reduce the overall file size. Future patches for Modern Warfare and Warzone are expected to be smaller than this update," the developers write.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season 2 Reloaded Update Now Live With New Maps, Modes, And More

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and the battle royale game Warzone are each set to grow in a major way this week with the launch of the much-anticipated Season 2 Reloaded update. This update is out now for Black Ops Cold War and is coming to the battle royale game later today, March 30. The update adds new maps, modes, and features, along with new weapons and store bundles. More Zombies content is planned as well, and lots more.

Activision ran through all the details in a blog post, and we've got a roundup here of the key points.

No Caption ProvidedSeason 2 Reloaded Timing

The Season 2 Reloaded update went live for Black Ops Cold War on March 29 at 9 PM PT, which is 12 AM ET on March 30. Warzone players get the update a little later, beginning on March 30 at 11 PM PT, which is March 31 at 2 AM ET.

File Size

The file size for Season 2 Reloaded will be between 7.4 GB - 14.18 GB depending on your platform if you own Black Ops Cold War. It will be 52-57.8 GB if you own Warzone. The file size is so big due to 'the optimization of data,' Activision said.

Black Ops Cold War Update Sizes

  • PlayStation 5: 12.2 GB
  • PlayStation 4: 7.4 GB
  • Xbox Series X / Xbox Series S: 14.18 GB
  • Xbox One: 9.13 GB
  • PC: 8.1 GB

  • Xbox One: 57.8 GB
  • PC: 52.4 GB (Warzone only) / 133.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)
  • Modern Warfare And Warzone File Size Reduction

The Season 2 Reloaded update is gigantic, but it also leads to an overall reduction in download size once it's complete. People who own the full version of Modern Warfare and Warzone, or those who own just Warzone, will see their file size drop overall.

'Enhancements to the overall content management system has been made possible through data optimization and streamlining content packs needed for individual game modes,' Activision said. 'This will come after a larger than usual, one-time update for Season Two Reloaded, which will include these optimizations and is necessary in order to reduce the overall footprint; future patch sizes for Modern Warfare and Warzone are expected to be smaller than the one set to release on March 30 at 11PM PST.'

With the update applied, Warzone's file size will drop by between 10.9 GB and 14.2 GB, while the Modern Warfare/Warzone file size will fall by between 30.6 GB and 33.6 GB.

Here is a rundown of the approximate reduction in file size you'll see for Warzone and Modern Warfare/Warzone for your specific platform:

  • PlayStation 5: 10.9 GB (Warzone Only) / 30.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)
  • PlayStation 4: 10.9 GB (Warzone Only) / 30.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)
  • Xbox Series X / Xbox Series S: 14.2 GB (Warzone Only) / 33.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)
  • Xbox One: 14.2 GB (Warzone Only) / 33.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)
  • PC: 11.8 GB (Warzone Only) / 30.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)
  • New Maps For Black Ops Cold War

Several new maps are in the Black Ops Cold War in the Season 2 Reloaded update, the first of which is Miami Strike. A 6v6 map, this is a smaller version of Miami that's set in the day instead of night. People complained that the original version of Miami was too dark and too big, so Treyarch tweaked it and created Miami Strike.

Players can try Miami Strike to their heart's content in the 24/7 playlist for it this week.

Another new map is Mansion, which is set in Cuba. This is a 2v2 or 3v3 map which is very small and promises 'high-octane, frenetic firefights,' according to Activision.

The third new map available at launch with Season 2 Reloaded is Golova, which is a multi-team, massive map set in a Russian village. Players might find the map familiar, as parts of it were included in the Outbreak mode for Zombies.

No Caption ProvidedNew Multiplayer Modes And More

In addition to new maps, there are new multiplayer modes coming to Black Ops Cold War, the first of which is Multi-Team Hardpoint. This is the largest version of Hardpoint, featuring 10 squads of four fighting to control Hardpoints across the map. In addition to being played with more people and on larger maps, Multi-Team Hardpoint gives players 1 point for every second when all teammates are in the Hardpoint. The first to 1,000 points wins.

The popular Prop Hunt mode gets new maps and props with Season 2 Reloaded, with Miami Strike and Satellite joining the mix. New props are included, but Activision didn't specify them.

At some point in Season 2 Reloaded, a new feature called Gunsmith Customs will be added to Black Ops Cold War. This allows players to mix and match attachments that were previously locked to one weapon.

    Weapon Balance Changes

The Season 2 Reloaded update introduces a series of weapon balance changes for LMGs as well as additional tuning for the LC10, AK-74u, Mac-10, KSP 45, Milano 821, Krig 6, FFAR 1, Groza, Magnum, and RPG-7. There are also changes coming to several attachments, as well as assault rifles and SMGs. Additionally, rocket damage has been increased overall against enemies with Flak Jacket in Hardcore. You can see a rundown of all the changes below in the official patch notes.

    New Zombies Content

Zombies fans are getting some new content and features, including the new Sanatorium night region of the Outbreak map. This is the same Sanatorium you know, but at night, which should make it a lot spookier.

There is also a new Outbreak objective called Secure, which challenges players to secure special resources from the undead and protect it for a certain period of time.

'Squad up and call down the Essence Conversion Modules from orbit. These rocket-powered collection capsules siphon Essence from the undead and convert it into items you can use in combat,' reads a line from its description. 'To complete this task, Requiem agents must kill zombies in the established perimeter until the conversion process is complete… easier said than done.'

A new Outbreak vehicle is also coming to Zombies in the Season 2 Reloaded update--the dirt bike. This is a fast vehicle that handles well and should help you move across the map quickly to avoid the undead and complete objectives.

There will also be additional secrets to discover, including new audio logs and radio transmissions that shed new light on the overarching Dark Aether story. Activision also teased that players can expect 'other mysteries' to discover across the map.

In other Zombies news, the Dead Ops Arcade is getting tweaked so players get XP and battle pass XP for participating. Activision also reminded players that Dead Ops Arcade recently added a first-person mode, so players can check it out from a new perspective.

A new Dead Ops Arcade map called Silverback Slideways is coming to Zombies in the new update as well; this is the fourth Silverback Slideways map in the game.

Finally, Zombies fans are getting a new feature in the update called 'Apply Blueprint.' This allows you to apply any weapon blueprint to their weapon from the Pause menu in not only Outbreak, but also Firebase Z and Die Maschine.

    PlayStation Exclusive Content

Sony's exclusivity deal with Activision continues with Season 2 Reloaded, as Onslaught players can check out the new Containment mode on the game's Gunfight maps. There are also new Level 2 and Level 3 armor drops, an ammo mode, and aether tool that players can use to upgrade their weapons. New Bronze, Silver, and Gold Chalice drops are coming as well. This content will presumably be available on other platforms beyond PlayStation later.

    New Operators

The Operator list for Black Ops Cold War and Warzone grows with the Season 2 Reloaded update to include a man named Wolf, who will be available at launch.

'From a young age, Terrell Wolf perfected his skills as a hunter in the Louisiana bayous surrounding his grandparent's home,' reads a line from his description. 'Entering service on his 18th birthday in memory of his fallen brother, he now stalks more dangerous prey as an elite Delta Force sniper working alongside Woods in the search for Russell Adler.'

Wolf has a canine friend who comes out for a brutal finishing move.

The second new Operator is Rivas, who grew up in Nicaragua and witnessed the brutality of the cartel first-hand. 'Her skills are unparalleled in the continuing search for Adler,' reads a line from her description.

Wolf will be available at the Season 2 Reloaded launch while Rivas is due to release later. They can be purchased in store bundles with Call of Duty Points.

    A New Weapon

The ZRG 20mm sniper is coming to Black Ops Cold War and Warzone later in the season. This new sniper rifle has a fast reload speed and is capable of dropping an enemy with a single shot not only to the head but also in the chest or shoulders, making it very deadly. You can unlock the weapon by completing an in-game challenge or you can buy it outright.
