Playstation 5: The Sony console has an expiration date

Playstation 5

Like the previous Sony console, the Playstation 5 has an internal battery that the device relies on. This special battery, a so-called "CMOS", ensures that the PS5 always knows the current time even when it is switched off or even completely disconnected from the power supply. The console needs this reliable and always up-to-date time to authorize access to purchased digital games, i.e. to enable them at all. The CMOS battery is also essential for many games on disc. If the battery goes dead, this means: No more access to purchased digital games. And many disc titles also become unplayable. And to top it all off, the life of such a battery is not even particularly long.

Also interesting: the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 Ti may be about to be released

Only five to ten years ?

The lifespan of CMOS batteries varies, but is usually between five and ten years. For example, if you bought your PS5 for the original release at the end of 2020, you could have problems with the battery before the Playstation 6 appears (assuming that the PS5 will have a similar lifespan as previous Sony consoles). What is very easy with PCs - the CMOS battery can easily be changed in a few minutes - is not that easy with consoles like the Playstation 5 n (buy now).

Console is still starting

A small improvement should be mentioned with the PS5: the console still works if the CMOS battery runs out, and some games on disc are still running. Earlier Sony consoles such as the PS3, PS Vita and PSP cannot be switched on without the battery.

Playing hardly possible anymore

The team from "Does it Play" has found out that Spider-Man: Miles Morales, for example, still works without any problems. Mortal Kombat 11 as the next example can no longer even be installed from the disc. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War starts again, but then does not continue to work because online games are only possible with a functioning CMOS battery. Purely digital games can no longer be started at all.

Both PlayStation 5 devices are expected 'imminently' at Smyths Toys

If you been waiting and holding out to get your hands on the coveted PlayStation 5, then you might be in luck this week as stock at Smyths Toys is expected very soon.

Ever since launching last year in November, gamers have been desperate to get their hands on the latest Sony device - and it’s been a challenge for most.

The PlayStation 5 console, with the disk tray, will set you back £449.99 at Smyths Toys, and has been listed with “Out of stock. Expected in stock: May 2021” on their website.

The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, that comes without a disk tray, and comes in slightly cheaper at £359.99. It currently says “Out of Stock. Expected in stock: April 2021” - so customers won’t have a long to wait for the digital version.

With only two weeks until the end of April, those who are eagerly awaiting to get their hands on the PS5 don’t have long to go - so we suggest checking daily. Sadly we don’t have a confirmed date for the stock to drop. But you can check their landing page, here.

It has been known to check around midnight, and then early in the morning - between the hours of 7am and 9am, then again at midday. That’s because these are common re-stocking times for retailers to drop product.

The PlayStation 5 console unleashes new gaming possibilities. Experience lightning-fast load times and deeper immersion with haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, 3D audio and a new generation of PlayStation games.

Maximise your gaming sessions with almost instant load times for installed PS5 games. Custom integration lets creators pull data from the SSD faster than ever, creating new possibilities for game designers.

Immerse yourself in a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated. The PlayStation 5 console powers true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.

Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.

With an HDR TV, supported PS5 games display an even more vibrant range of colours. PS5 consoles support 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.

Immerse yourself in soundscapes where it feels as if the sound comes from every direction. Through your headphones or TV speakers, in-game surroundings come alive with Tempest 3D AudioTech in supported games.

Experience haptic feedback with the DualSense wireless controller. Feel the impact of your in-game actions through dynamic sensory feedback in select PS5 titles.
