Netflix Geeked: the new TV series dedicated to video games

Netflix Geeked

Netflix this year follows the trail of E3 events with the Geeked format, a review that reveals the future schedule of the platform. Over the past week, TV series have been announced for all tastes. Among the most interesting outside the videogame world we point out the third season of Umbrella Academy, the last of The paper house, Cobra Kai IV, Master of the Universe (yes, He-Man), Cowboy Bebop, The Sandman of Neil Gaiman and finally Gundam Hathaway, the first part of a new feature film trilogy.

Again this year Netflix holds high regard and opens its doors to gamers. A trend that started gradually. Just think of Castlevania, the documentary High Score, Bandersnatch and Minecraft: Story Mode (a porting of the Telltale adventure). It is not surprising, in fact, that the last date of the Geeked had as its focus the TV series taken from video games. Geoff Keighley as a special guest accompanied the hosts of the broadcast. Our medium, as always, is ready to meet face to face with the seventh art. So here are the next transpositions coming, from Resident Evil to The Witcher.

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness will be a CGI series starring Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. The first episode is confirmed for July 8th. The Netflix event was attended by the voice actors of the American version (Nick Apostolides and Stephanie Panisello), already voices of the two protagonists in Resident Evil 2 Remake. We saw two locations: Washington DC and the Republic of Penamstan, where a civil war is underway in which the Progenitor virus is experienced.

Watch on YouTube. If you've seen the feature films Degeneration, Damnation and Vendetta, you already know that they are in continuity with the main series. The expanded universe of Resident Evil, in fact, delves into several times the events ranging from the destruction of Raccoon City to the Resident Evil 6 epidemic. Claire works with TerraSave while Leon is at the service of the president of the United States of America, in a role that we have seen him cover several times. The appearance of a Tyrant, in the final part of the trailer, is very reminiscent of some moments at the origin of the franchise.

League of Legends: Arcane

Riot Games presents an exclusive clip in which Jinx , in a delightful graphic style that highlights his almost watercolor face, he explores an abandoned building. Here rests an inactive machine, a robot coach for boxing, which once repaired is targeted with blows. In a dynamic and spectacular action sequence, between tears and sweat, the training overlaps with a flashback on the past of Jinx and another of the heroes of League: Vi.

Watch on YouTube. Arcane, an animated series obviously linked to League of Legends, will arrive in autumn 2021. And not alone. Riot is working on interesting projects, including a fighting game (Project L) and an MMO that we will know more about in the months to come. The series will feature multiple characters from Piltover and Zaun, is aimed at a target 14+ and will address mature themes. It seems that he will delve into the backstories of some of the most well-known characters in the franchise.

The Cuphead Show

Cuphead and Mugman will fight the devil in the animated series based on the most particular indie run'n'gun of recent years. Cuphead's retro aesthetic was a not negligible selling point, first of all because he went far behind the typical revival of the era of cabin cruisers. An entire TV series with this unique style will certainly not go unnoticed. Considering the confusion of the spectators in front of the retro clips of WandaVision, we wonder what the reactions of the public not coming from the gaming environment will be in front of a format apparently so out of time.

Watch on YouTube. We are still waiting for the DLC The Delicious Last Course, but the transposition of the game by the Moldnehauer brothers has the flavor of a fairy tale with a happy ending. After all, reaching Netlfix was something unthinkable for a developer, only a few years ago, when video games were struggling to touch the cinema with appreciable results. The trailer showed King Dice (voiced by Wayne Brady) on the stage of a club packed with bizarre characters. A short but detailed scene that bodes well for the overall quality of the show, which will be released sometime in 2021.

Castlevania - Final season and new spin-off

Let's go back in Wallachia with the announcement of the last season of Castlevania. The grand finale is upon us. Created by Warren Ellis and based on Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, the series traces the stories of Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades and the half-breed Alucard fighting against nothing less than Dracula, the vampire par excellence. The trailer is packed with action sequences and features an impressive staircase topped by a river of blood.

Watch on YouTube. Animation and drawings are as always of fluctuating quality, but are governed by direction, narration and atmosphere of discreet workmanship. In closing, the team announced the arrival of a spin-off about Richter Belmont and Maria Renard, set during the French Revolution. After all, every grand finale is always followed by a new beginning. This generational progression can only make us think of JoJo, despite the level of animation settling on very different scales of magnitude.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

Sam Fisher is back, ready to show off his military tactics in new infiltrations and covert operations. Ubisoft, for Netflix Geeked, has prepared an interesting and certainly not predictable hat-trick. The announcement of the Splinter Cell anime opens the dance and goes well with the rumors about a possible new VR game.

The teaser trailer, very short, shows a now veteran Fisher in profile, with his typical viewer green. We wonder if the Italian dubbing will be up to Luca Ward. Certain information concerns the writing, entrusted to Derek Kolstad, screenwriter of John Wick. The animation studios involved are Sun Creature and Fost. With these names supporting the project, expectations are high. But regardless of the result, a return with great fanfare from Fisher has been hoped for for some time. Is Ubisoft testing the waters or has it prepared something big secretly, in full stealth tradition?

Far Cry and Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix

Based on the stand-alone expansion Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Captain Laserhawk is an animated series currently in pre-production. The atmosphere recalls the 80s and early 90s, the soundtrack is a succession of explosions of synthesizers. The pace, Keighley announces, will be adrenaline-pumping and full of very entertaining action scenes. Expect neon lights, F-Zero chases and a true Cyberpunk dystopia.

The Witcher - Season 2

Particular speech regarding the work taken from the stories of Andrzej Sapkowski. Let's face it, The Witcher wouldn't have made it to Netflix without the massive media hit of the CD Projekt RED trilogy. In any case, in a virtuous circle, fans have increased visibly, regardless of the format of reference. And just to the delight of fans, after more than a year of absence, the second season is officially upon us.

Watch on YouTube. The trailer (but it would be more appropriate to talk about sneak peek), short but intense, shows Ciri several times and a secret message in runic characters. Henry Cavill, aka Geralt of Rivia, will obviously be part of the cast. A release date is missing, but some surprises could arrive at WitcherCon, announced for July 9 in collaboration with CD Projekt RED. The poster, with Cavill and the videogame version of Geralt side by side, suggests that we will not only talk about live action.

Resident Evil: Live Action

At the end of Geeked here, again, Resident Evil. This time about the live action that was already rumored last year. It is the second production with real actors shown by Netflix during the video game themed day. The cast of actors was presented for the first time and the reveal focused on Albert Wesker, historical villain of the saga, played here by Lance Reddick (seen in John Wick, Quantum Break, The Wire).

"Who would ever want to play these ancient titles?"

PlayStation and mobile exclusives? 'We have IPs so strong it would be perverse not to take advantage of them'

The PlayStation community will have to learn to "share" for Jim Ryan.

The plot will focus on Umbrella Corps and Wesker's children, Jade and Billie, who moved to the mysterious New Raccoon City. A second timeline will show Jade, thirty years later, in a world dominated by the Virus T. Regardless of the narrative twists, the actresses featured are Ella Balinska (Charlie's Angels), Tamara Smart (Artemis Fowl), Siena Agudong (Star Falls) , Adeline Rudolph (Sabrina) and Paola Nunez (The Purge).

In conclusion, we cannot fail to mention the arrival of Eleven, Hopper, demogorgons and mind flayers of Stranger Things within Smite. It is not the first time that the characters of the city of Hawkins appear as guest stars of a video game: someone has already seen in Dead by Daylight.

This first edition of Geeked was full of new series and is a probable attempt by Netflix to start enhancing its frequent and numerous releases. If we think that Jupiter's Legacy has been canceled after just one season, it could be a winning choice and in the long term capable of paying off. Which of these announcements impressed you the most?
