Halo TV Series: Showrunner Leaves Xbox Movie Adaptation - The Next Setback?

Halo TV Series

Xbox and Halo fans have actually been hoping that the next big news about the sci-fi series, based on the massively successful Xbox brand Halo, would be a first real insight into the major project in the form of a teaser or trailer. However, according to Variety, there is now the next negative news: Steven Kane, showrunner of the Showtime-produced series, will not return for a second season and has already left the production. Do you have to worry that the high-quality TV show will end after one season? According to Variety, that's not the case. Thanks to the "high-profile nature of the underlying intellectual property and the heavy investment by ViacomCBS," a second season seems pretty likely - after all.

Showrunner leaves the project for "personal reasons"

Most of the TV series Halo was shot in Budapest, for "personal reasons" the showrunner Kane now wants to leave the project after a total of two years and return to the USA. The video game adaptation, consisting of a total of nine episodes, which will start in the USA on Paramount Plus, is scheduled to be broadcast sometime in the first quarter of 2022. It is still unclear when there will be a first trailer. The Canadian actor Pablo Schreiber ("Departure for the Moon", "Vicky Christina Barcelona", "Skyscraper") takes on the role of the iconic super soldier Master Chief, Dr. Catherine Elizabeth Halsey, the creator of the Spartans, is played by Natascha McElhone ("Californication", "The Truman Show"). Another cast member already known is actress Jen Taylor, who will play Cortana. Taylor already has a lot of experience in the Halo cosmos and was involved in the films "Halo 4 - Forward Unto Dawn" and "Halo: The Fall of Reach".

The director involved, responsible for at least two episodes, is the Englishman Otto Bathurst, who has made a name for himself with films such as Robin Hood (2018) and the series Black Mirror. Halo is set to "follow an epic conflict in the 26th century between humanity and an extraterrestrial threat known as the Covenant. Halo will interweave deep and personal stories with action, adventure and a rich vision of the future." It all sounds pretty good on paper, but the many setbacks paint a bleak picture.

The TV show Halo in Development Hell

The real plan for the Halo series was to target a release for 2015 under the direction of the legendary director Steven Spielberg - nothing came of it. The British Rupert Wyatt, director of the sci-fi remake "Planet of the Apes: Prevolution" (2011), then took on the role of director and producer. Showrunner, writer and executive producer was Kyle Killen, who made a name for himself with the TV series "Lone Star" (2010), "Awake" (2012) and "Mind Games" (2014). The new release plan for 2019 was set to 2020, but the Covid pandemic caused further postponements. Due to scheduling problems, Wyatt also left the project and was then replaced by Otto Bathurst, who has been in charge of production since then. Whether Halo will actually appear in the first quarter of 2022 is still in the stars. But we're not giving up hope.

What do you think of the situation around the ambitious Halo series?
