Steam Deck over 30 fps, a new feature unveiled

Steam Deck over 30 fps

Last week Pierre-Loup Griffais, developer of Steam Deck working on the machine and its presentation to the public, spoke of a target of 800p and 30 fps for the handheld console. This information could only create doubts in players, especially PC ones, who are used to much higher standards. However, Griffais wanted to clarify this detail on his Twitter profile, specifying some points on Valve's platform.

The developer had to clarify the question of 30 fps as a target, specifying that he was actually referring to the "ceiling of what we considered playable in our performance tests “. The 30 frames per second are therefore a minimum and not a maximum threshold, he explains, which has always been "reached and exceeded until now". Steam Deck has the ability to reach very high frame rates on many important titles, thanks above all to very high technical specifications.

However, it is interesting an unpublished novelty revealed by Pierre-Loup Griffais in the same tweet, in which reveals the presence of an optional fps limiter, which can be activated in case you want to save battery by lowering the performance of Steam Deck. It is unclear exactly how it works, but it seems that users will have the option to manually decide how many frames per second they want to set the limiter.

The "30 FPS target" refers to the floor of what we consider playable in our performance testing; games we've tested and shown have consistently met and exceeded that bar so far. There will also be an optional built-in FPS limiter to fine-tune perf vs. battery life.

Valve's portable platform is showing itself more and more interesting and full of functions very useful for everyday gaming. There are really a lot of users curious about the console, especially since according to the company there will not be a single unplayable title in the library on it. In any case, we too are waiting to be able to try Steam Deck firsthand which, we remember, will be released towards the end of 2021 all over the world, with pre-orders already open. What do you think of Valve's new platform? If you have booked it, which model do you prefer?

Most games 'consistently met or exceeded' 30 FPS on Steam Deck during testing

Valve has clarified what the company means by describing the Steam Deck as 'targeting 30 FPS'.

Though some prospective Steam Deckers were concerned at the use of the word 'targeting', Valve's Pierre-Loup Griffais took to Twitter to emphasise that the hardware wasn't targeting 30 FPS as much as it was suggesting 30 FPS is the minimum Steam Deck users can expect.

All the games that have been tested on Steam Deck thus far have reportedly 'consistently met and exceeded' 30 FPS, plus there'll also be an optional FPS limiter to enable players to choose between framerates and prolonging the mobile device's battery life.

'There will also be an optional built-in FPS limiter to fine-tune [performance] vs. battery life.'

ICYMI, eBay has recently clamped down on Steam Deck scalpers a week after we first reported on how they had taken to eBay with their £4 Steam Deck reservations, marking up the PC handheld by hundreds of pounds.

There were multiple listings of the Steam Deck on eBay at the time, all charging more than Valve's asking price. Some listings had the hardware up for sale for over £1000, but eBay has now scrubbed these listings, telling Eurogamer they were in breach of its presale policy as all presale listings must guarantee the item will be posted within 30 days of purchase.

Our friends at Digital Foundry recently discussed Steam Deck's updated specs, calling them 'promising for gaming performance and storage options'.
