PS5, here's how to install an M.2 SSD

Sony has published a complete guide on how to install an M.2 SSD on PS5, reserved for the moment only for users with beta firmware but also valid when all console owners will be able to access this feature.

The Japanese company had announced that PS5 will support SSD expansion from this summer with a firmware update, and that's exactly what's happening. We translate the guide below, currently only available in English on the official Playstation website.

What is an M.2 SSD?

M.2 SSD devices are high speed solid state drives that PS5 beta users can install to increase the console storage capacity. We recommend that you check that you have received a beta invitation before purchasing a new M.2 SSD.

Why add an M.2 SSD to your PS5?

Once installed on PS5, the storage offered by an M.2 SSD can be used to download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4</a> games, as well as other applications. This allows you to increase the space available on the console. You can also freely move games between PS5 storage, an external USB drive and the added M.2 SSD.

Which M.2 SSDs can be used with PS5?

It is important to use a compatible M.2 SSD to expand the storage of your PS5. Make sure you have an M.2 SSD that meets the following requirements. As the feature is in beta, the final specs may change before the official system software release.

You can connect one to the M.2 SSD yourself, in either single or dual format. There are also M.2 SSDs that natively have such dissipation systems. Sequential read speed: 5,500MB / s or higher. Module width: 22mm (total frame should be less than 25mm). Form factor: M.2 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. Before starting, you will need a well-lit room, a Phillips screwdriver and a small flashlight ( optional). Remember that this feature is currently only available to beta users. Before proceeding with the installation or removal of the M.2 SSD, touch a metal object to remove any static charges from your body.

If you exit the beta program and restore the firmware to the latest official version , you will need to remove the M.2 SSD first. If you don't, your system may malfunction and you may need to reinstall the beta program to fix the problem.

If this is your first time using your M.2 SSD on PS5, you will need to format it later installation. When you format it, any data on the drive will be erased and cannot be recovered, so be careful. Do not turn off the console while saving data or formatting the M.2 SSD. Do not use an M.2 SSD without a heatsink system.



Go to Settings> System> System Software> Console Information to verify that you have installed the beta version. Press and hold the power button for three seconds to turn off the PS5, then remove all cables and devices from the console. Wait until the PS5 has cooled down. Place the console on a soft cloth placed on a flat surface and remove the base. Position the console so that the hole for the base is in front of you, the PS logo is on the underside and the power button is on your left. Place your palms near the top corners and grasp the ends of the cover. Gently push the cover up and towards you, you should hear a click. Once the cover has been removed, you will find a panel covering the expansion slot: remove the screw and take it out. Inside you will find a screw with a washer: remove it and place it in another hole depending on the length of the SSD. Hold the end of your M.2 SSD, align the notch of the expansion connector and starting diagonally insert it all the way. Lower the M.2 SSD into the slot and secure it with the screws. Replace the panel to cover the slot and secure it with the screws. Reassemble the cover by placing it slightly away (about 2 cm) from the top end and slide it to reattach it. You will hear a click when it is fixed. Reconnect the cables, the base and turn on the console. Once the PS5 is turned on, a guide for formatting the drive will appear: follow the instructions on the screen to carry out the operation.
