PC Games: Yuffie doesn't seem like the most obvious choice for getting her own chapter in FF7RI - no spoilers of course for those unfamiliar with the original game. Why did you choose to put them in the spotlight?

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade: Exclusive Interview with Producer and Directors (1) Source: Square Enix Toriyama: In FF7R Episode Intermission we tell a different story that takes place in parallel to the events of the main game and shows a different side of Midgar . The character we felt would most naturally fit into a story like this was Yuffie. The other optional character from the original was Vincent Valentine, but he's sleeping under Shinra Manor at this point in the story, so we couldn't get him out of his coffin. In the original story, Yuffie was a materia hunter at the time.

By letting her get to Midgar at some point on this trip, we were able to make her experience the same incident as Cloud and the others, and also show him from a different angle. That let us take an even deeper look into the world of Midgar and also showed Yuffie's views on what happened. She has a serene and happy kind of character, but we will meet her in the future after she overcome the tragic events of FF7R Episode Intermission, which should make her first meeting with Cloud even more engaging.

PC Games: You have implemented quite a few technical updates in FF7RI, including a photo mode. Are you planning to bring some of these to the PS4 if possible?

Hamaguchi: I can't comment on future developments for Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS4, but my personal opinion is that the PS4 is a great game machine and has a lot of potential.

PC Games: With FF7R you've changed the story a lot compared to the original, and giving Yuffie a much bigger role here seems to be following in the same footsteps. Was there a concern that changing a story loved by so many people around the world could be dangerous?

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade: Exclusive Interview with Producer and Directors (2) Source: Square Enix Toriyama: I think the content we present with the latest technology and expertise in game design has evolved over that should what we were doing with the technology we had at the time of the original Final Fantasy 7. What we should definitely not change, however, is our endeavor to tackle new challenges on the creative side. It's actually quite tricky to keep that kind of attitude in order to create new things.

To take an example, after the original game was released, a number of other works expanded the world of Final Fantasy 7 tremendously . FF7 Remake is based on the original, but will be realized after all these expansions of the universe, so we want to take advantage of that and plan it as a kind of "merging" of all works that are set in the Final Fantasy universe to this day. I also think that fans of the original will be able to enjoy the game more if it includes new episodes that delve deeper into the existing story and scenes that are expanded and portrayed more fully so that we don't always stick to the original version too rigidly have to. Of course, we're not making this a completely different game and we're drawing the line as we get closer to the important core elements, so you can look forward to seeing how events are portrayed in this game : Considering that FF7R was released a while ago, you have certainly learned a lot from this experience that helped you develop Intermission. Additionally, you got a lot of feedback from the fans, both good and bad. How did that affect your perception and the way you do things when creating the new content? Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade: Exclusive Interview with Producer and Directors (4) Source: Square Enix Hamaguchi: We have indeed learned a lot from the fan reaction to Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but I remember that the response to the way we treated the remake process as a tribute to the original Final Fantasy 7 has been very positive. We strongly believe that the most important thing is not to spoil people's memories of the original while the remake is to exceed fans' expectations. This applies not only to FF7R Episode Intermission, but also to everything that comes next as part of the entire Final Fantasy 7 remake project.

PC Games: Looking at FF7R and FF7RI : Is this the game you would have developed if you had had the opportunity and the technology you needed back then in 1996/1997, or has your way of developing games changed significantly since then?

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade: Exclusive Interview with Producer and Directors (5) Source: Square Enix Kitase: I think if I had been given the specifications of a PS5 back in 1997, I would have panicked. It would be like giving the keys to a Ferrari to a kid who has just passed their driver's license! I think it was probably a good thing that we could gradually move up from the PS1 because when we started we had zero know-how with CG. Today, the number of people, budgets, and production environments involved in making games can rival Hollywood film productions. Things have changed massively in the last 24 years.

PC Games: What do you think is the special connection between FF7 and FF7 Remake that makes people love both?

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade: Exclusive Interview with Producer and Directors (3) Source: Square Enix Kitase: My oldest son was born the year Final Fantasy 7 came out. It goes without saying that he wasn't old enough to play it when it was released, but he has become an avid gamer and is now old enough to play FF7 Remake.

Hamaguchi: When I was a student, Final Fantasy 6 and 7 were what motivated me to get into the industry and become a game developer, and about 20 years later I find myself in the development department for the Final Fantasy series. In that sense, Final Fantasy 7 was the start of it all for me, and I honestly feel like I want to give something back by pouring all of my experience and know-how that I've built up into the remake br>

PC Games: Would you say that intermission is an important part of understanding the story of FF7? What role does it play in the overall story of FF7 Remake?

Toriyama: Since FF7 Remake Episode Intermission takes place in parallel to the events of the main game story and shows another aspect of Midgar through the eyes of Yuffie, it fits in as an additional episode that expands the main story. It lets fans dive deeper into the city of Midgar and shows a new side of Yuffie, as well as different perspectives on Avalanche and their activities in the slums, and also the dark side of the Shinra corporation. I believe that playing FF7R Episode Intermission will help understand the relationships between the main characters as the story progresses, so it will be even more fun to explore the growing world of Final Fantasy VII Remake >
