Best Soulslike to Buy | April 2021

Since 2009, with the debut of Demon's Souls (here our review of the PS5 version), FromSoftware has managed to revolutionize the action / RPG genre, thanks to a hostile and rewarding adventure at the same time. Two years later, with the publication of the first Dark Souls, the development house has refined the original formula even more, generating, in turn, a wide interest in other software houses to reproduce this formula. This marked the videogame panorama forever giving birth to the 'Soulslike' sub-genre.

These are role-playing games with action components, which are inspired, in summary, by the following aspects of Miyazaki's works: obfuscated narrative and narrated through a lore, to the layered and well-distributed level design, to the exploratory mode and the combat system. In this guide, we will try to show you which are the best soulslike, those titles that have been able to properly exploit the formula created by FromSoftware! br>

The founders of the subgenre

As specified above, two titles started the soulslike trend: Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. The adventures in the Kingdom of Boletaria and in Lordran, have been able to revolutionize the action / RPG genre, instilling in the players a constant desire for similar titles. Dark Souls also surprises with its perfectly branched level design. But what really attracted so many players was the artistic direction of the Souls: a Middle Ages with Lovecraftian hues, with breathtaking gothic scenarios like Anor Londo (Dark Souls) and titanic bosses like the Knight of the Tower (Demon's Souls).

On Amazon Italy, you can recover the entire Dark Souls trilogy thanks to the 'Dark Souls Trilogy', including the remastered of the first chapter, the other two titles of the saga, all the DLCs of the three games and the columns sound. A great opportunity for anyone who has never played one of the most influential trilogies in video game history!

For PS5 owners, however, the remake of the legendary Demon's Souls is available! Made by Bluepoint Games (already known for the remake of Shadow of the Colossus), the iconic 2009 title has kept its soul intact, but has received a marked improvement in graphics and effects. Also, the animations are now smoother and fresher, but the development team has left the combat system unchanged; definitely faithful to FromSoftware's work!

Best Soulslike

Bloodborne The Surge Nioh Sekiro Shadows Die Twice Code Vein Remnant: From The Ashes Ashen Mortal Shell

Bloodborne

Which game to start from, if not Bloodborne! Developed by FromSoftware itself exclusively for PS4, it is one of the best (if not the best) soulsikes you can play. With a Gothic / Victorian setting and a bestiary strongly inspired by the works of Lovecraft (such as Demon's Souls and Dark Souls), Bloodborne offers the player a similar experience, but at the same time different, compared to the previous works of the software house . This diversity derives above all from a combat system that replaces shields with guns, making the title hectic, due to a defense based mainly on parry, counterattacks and dodges. It will also be impossible not to fall in love with the excellent art design of characters, enemies and setting. A game not to be missed!

The Surge

The peculiarity of The Surge saga lies in its setting: the the story takes place, in fact, in a dystopian future where the Earth has now come to an end, due to climate change. Warren, the protagonist, will have to face the operators with crazed exoskeletons and the out of control machines of the CREO. Without going into further details of the plot, the Deck13 saga fits perfectly within this guide dedicated to the best soulslike, thanks to its futuristic variant that even replaces the classes with exoskeletons: RHYNO, based on defense, and LYNX on speed.

Nioh

Developed by Team Ninja (Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, Hyrule Warriors), Nioh 1 and Nioh 2 are among the best soulslike ever: the classic mechanics of the subgenre blend with the beautiful Japanese setting, enriched even more by its folklore. In fact, the Japan of the Sengoku era is devastated by the Oni, demons with orcish features. The player's aim, of course, will be to fight them, both as former pirate William (Nioh) and as our alter ego (Nioh 2). Are you ready, therefore, to wreak havoc on yōkai?

Sekiro Shadows Die Twice

is considered a soulslike, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice has certainly undergone a strong influence from the previous works of FromSoftware. This is an action that will put you in the shoes of Sekiro, an experienced shinobi in the middle of the Sengoku era. Among lotus flowers, demons and well-characterized antagonists, you will have to make your way with katana and prosthetic tools (installed in the mechanical arm of the protagonist). The outcome of the fight will not be marked by the stamina, but by the posture (both yours and the opponent's) that you will have to break and defend to get the better of your enemies. Even though it's pure action, it's impossible not to rank among the best soulslike ones!

Code Vein

Developed and published by Bandai Namco, Code Vein is among the best soulslike for its rather particular style: with anime-style graphics, the events take place in one post-apocalyptic scenario. We will play a Revenant, or a survivor of the cataclysm known as the 'Great Ruin', who modified his body through the BOR parasite. Unlike the soulslike classics, Code Vein also introduces a sort of 'Companions' system that will support the player.

Remnant: From the Ashes

Post-apocalyptic scenario, Lovecraft-style monsters and darkness; but face it all with firearms. Remnant: From The Ashes does this: mix classic Souls mechanics with a third-person shooter. The result? An amazing and fast-paced game! While there are several differences, such as procedurally generated maps and enemies, the work of Gunfire Games offers that classic dose of punishment and commitment of the vein. Impossible not to be included among the best soulslike!

Ashen

Developed by the New Zealand A44 team and published by Annapurna Interactive, Ashen is a low fantasy soulslike. Set in a sunless world, with the god of light long gone, you must guide your alter ego in search of a place to call home. With cel-shaded graphics, the game offers users a memorable adventure (with a more than good narrative) and a much more permissive cooperative mode than the classic Souls.

Mortal Shell

Mortal Shell, developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack, immediately captured the attention of the press and users, thanks to its very close to Dark Souls, but with a combat system and move set a little closer to Sekiro's frenzy. Despite some uncertainties (given its semi-independent nature), Cold Simmetry's work has been well received, with over 500,000 copies distributed since its launch on August 18, 2020, to March 2021. In addition, a Enhanced Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
