Subaru STI E-RA

The Japanese brand Subaru is preparing for an epochal turning point that will be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, which will take place in the Japanese capital between 14 and 16 January 2022. It is an event in which Japanese manufacturers bring out the most important innovations, and this year Subaru promises a crackling event.

Among the various innovations presented there will be a particularly important one, the Subaru STI E- RA, the first 100% electric version of the compact sports car that has made Subaru's fortune over the years. As anticipated at the beginning, this is an epochal turning point, as this new Subaru STI E-RA will be the company's first 100% electric sports car, and must be able to meet the very high expectations of the brand's enthusiasts. Unfortunately we do not have great technical information on the car; for the moment the company has limited itself to releasing a teaser in which you can see the front line of the car, characterized by C-shaped headlights and the bright red STI brand placed in the center of the bumper, almost replacing the Subaru logo itself.

In addition to the long-awaited E-RA STI, Subaru will also bring other models to the 2022 Tokyo Motor Show, including a high-performance concept called WRX STI, a prototype based on the WRX S4 STI Sport R and dedicated exclusively to the Japanese market; this car features a body kit designed to improve the car's aerodynamics, and can boast a very generous rear wing.

There are still 3 weeks left until the Tokyo Motor Show but the Japanese event already promises very interesting news.

Subaru STI E-RA electric car concept to debut in 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon

Subaru Technica Intentional (STI), Subaru Corporation’s motorsport and performance division, announced that it will roll out an all-electric concept called the STI E-RA. The Japanese marque said that the concept car will be unveiled at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon as a high-performance electric vehicle (EV).

Since Subaru claims that the concept car is a ‘study model for future motorsport vehicles toward a carbon-neutral era,’ the use of an internal combustion engine (ICE) is very unlikely. Instead, the vehicle should be equipped with an all-electric powertrain with the inclusion of high-performance enhancements through STI.

If this concept is brought to life, the STI E-RA will be joining the Subaru Solterra in the Japanese marque’s all-electric lineup. As such, similarities in terms of the powertrain are expected. The most obvious is the use of two electric motors for the front and back to run the all-wheel-drive (AWD) system efficiently.

We can’t be sure just yet as no official specifications have been unveiled by Subaru. But based on the press photos, the STI E-RA, covered in smoke, comes with a new grille that illuminates ‘STI’ in red. The brand’s signature C-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) are redesigned to appear more bolder and pronounced.

Additionally, Subaru will be unveiling four more models at the upcoming motor show, namely the WRX S4 STI performance concept, Levorg STI performance concept, BRZ STI performance, and BRZ GT 300 2021.

Out of all the concepts, only the WRX S4 STI has been given a preview. It features STI-exclusive upgrades such as cherry red accents on the lower portion of the vehicle, red side mirrors, and a spoiler. Aside from those, the concept car still sports the same grille design, hood scoop, and blacked-out wheel fenders.

The 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon will be running from January 14 to 16 next year. It will be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. Subaru will host a press conference on January 14, then an open house for the remaining dates.
