LEGO and the Chinese New Year: all the sets dedicated to the Lunar New Year

LEGO and the Chinese New Year

LEGO took the opportunity of the fourth edition of the China International Import Expo in Shanghai to present the new sets of the Chinese New Year 2022. Inaugurated in 2019, the new series of thematic sets dedicated to the celebrations of the Chinese New Year is becoming decidedly substantial, allowing fans of bricks and lovers of oriental atmospheres to start thinking and designing dioramas and scenes of and with Asian landscapes. What do you think, do we want to take a look at these fantastic sets?

A bit of history

Anyone who follows the events of the brick closely, yes will certainly remember the baillame of 2019 when, with a decision considered somewhat questionable by the whole community of Danish brick enthusiasts, the LEGO Group decided to put three specific sets for sale in the APAC market only (China, rest of Asia and Oceania) for the area itself on the occasion of the Chinese New Year, that is the Chinese New Year's Eve Dinner set "(80101), the Dragon Dance set (80102) and the Dragon bat race set (80103), now all withdrawn from sale and therefore recoverable only on the secondary market (bricklink.com, Amazon, eBay etc). Literally submerged by an avalanche of protests from the global community, the LEGO Group Management announced that starting from May 2019, ALL regional sets (i.e. created specifically for a specific "geographic" market) would be made available for everything else. of the world through lego.com, the official and direct e-commerce site of LEGO (better known as the LEGO Shop) after no more than 4-6 months from the sale in the reference market. Thanks to this decision, it was possible to obtain the Dragon bat race set (80103) simply by accessing the Italian LEGO Shop, instead of turning to the secondary market or to relatives, friends or colleagues who for some reason had to go to China, Asia or Australia / New Zeland.

For this 2021 just started , perhaps also taking into account the logistics problems and the various travel restrictions imposed globally by the pandemic, things went even better: not only the new ones arrived on our Italian lego.com already on January 1st, but the usual two LEGO System sets has been added a third DUPLO 2-in-1 set, which allows you to build both an apartment section and a kindergarten classroom.

I Sep 2021

LEGO # 80106 History of Nian

The set allows you to play Nian's story legend. The set includes a typical Chinese-style mansion complete with traditional decorations and buildable fireworks, firecrackers, hanging lanterns and Chun Lian banners. Added to the scene is the buildable and posable Nian creature, a snowman and 6 minifigures, including a grandfather, grandmother, 3 children and a person in an ox costume to celebrate the Year of the Ox.

LEGO # 80107 Spring Lantern Festival

The 2022 sets

The two new sets dedicated to the celebrations of the Chinese New Year 2022 are already available on Italian lego.com.

LEGO # 80108 Lunar New Year Traditions

It is a modular set that shows the family traditions of the Lunar New Year. The six buildable scenes can be linked together in various ways and each scene reproduces one of the characteristic and typical activities of the holidays: shopping at the market for the party banquet, creating lucky decorations, cleaning the house while waiting for friends and relatives , visit the grandparents, the exchange of red envelopes "Hongbao". A "special" module contains the minifigure of the Chinese God of Prosperity, complete with the traditional red packet and a gold bar. The set can be built by 6 people at the same time: the instructions are separated into 6 different instruction booklets, one for each of the 6 modules that make up the set itself, so that the whole family can share the building experience. There are 12 minifigures included in the set: the God of Wealth, a salesman with his stall, a couple, a man, a girl and a family of 6: dad, mom, grandfather, grandmother, little girl and boy. >

LEGO # 80109 Lunar New Year Ice Festival

The set looks in effect inspired by the well-known Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. The set features a highly detailed winter scene with brick ice lake, equipment rental shop, sweet potato vendor cart, photo booth, Chun ice sculpture, vending machine, penguin sleigh, ski slope, snowy tree and much more. It is also part of the set with the Minifigure disguised as a tiger to celebrate the Year of the Tiger (2022)! The most particular details are the large opalescent elements used to make the skating rink and the cardboard of the character of the Zodiac Tiger to be used for selfies, in addition to the cart that sells roasted chestnuts, a delicacy as popular in China and Asia as it is here from us in the winter. There are 13 minifigures included in the set: a sweet potato seller, an ice sculptor, a mom, a dad, children and a penguin and various others. Do we even have a hint of Perry the Platypus?
