The Last of Us: New photos for the series allow a first look at the film set

The Last of Us

The filming of The Last of Us series has been going on since the beginning of July. The producers chose Calgary, Canada, as the location. In the meantime, the first set photos are even circulating on the Internet. Even more: The Twitter user "necromonica1" even uploaded a short video clip showing one of the police cars from the set of the series for The Last of Us. The footage reveals how much effort the producers put into redesigning the streets so that they look like Austin, Texas, from the PS4 adventure.

However, it is unclear which scenes are currently being shot. The thoroughly clean streets suggest, however, that the prologue will be created here first. The first season of The Last of Us (buy now € 20.00) comprises ten episodes, as we recently reported. How long an episode of the Last of Us series will be out is not known. It should not be entirely unlikely that an episode is designed for a running time of 50 to 60 minutes and thus corresponds to the HBO standard.

Details about the content of the first season of the Last of Us series also remain to be seen. It is believed that the first season initially takes up Part 1 of the PS4 adventure and later seasons deal with The Last of Us Part 2. Filming is scheduled to end on June 8, 2022. The Last of Us could therefore start at the end of 2022 at the earliest. HBO has not yet announced a date.

HBO’s Expensive As Heck ‘The Last Of Us’ Series Has A ‘Game Of Thrones’-Sized Budget

The Last of Us, one of the most acclaimed video game series of all-time, is being turned into an HBO series. There’s a big star (Pedro Pascal), a big-name showrunner (Craig Mazin, formerly of the Emmy-winning miniseries Chernobyl), and a BIG budget.

“The Last of Us, which commences photography this week, is indeed a monster,” International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees 212 union president Damian Petti told CTV News (the show is being filmed in Alberta, Canada). “It has five art directors and employs an army of hundreds of technicians. It has had six months of prep and shoots for 12 months. I cannot confirm the official budget numbers, but will say it is likely the largest project shooting in Canada. This project well exceeds the eight-figure per episode mark, so there is a multiplier effect on our economy in terms of its impact. There are hundreds of related businesses benefitting from the plethora of work.”

Game of Thrones cost $15 million/per episode in its final season, meaning The Last of Us is likely in the $10-$20 million range. Pascal has expensive taste.

The Last of Us doesn’t have a sprawling (read: expensive) ensemble cast — Pascal’s Joel and Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, will be the only characters on screen for much of season one — but turning Canada into a wasteland of fungus dens, molotov cocktails, and monsters isn’t cheap. There are no dragons, but there are clickers. Lots of them.
