Piero Angela, the journalist and science popularizer who gave life to the well-known SuperQuark program, broadcast on Rai Uno for 27 years (since 1995), has died. To spread the news was the son Alberto Angela through a post on Facebook full of pain, whose caption reports simple and heartfelt words: “Have a good trip dad“. The father was 93 years old.

As remembered by his son, Piero Angela celebrated his 70 years of work in Rai, where he began his career as a radio reporter in the Giornale Radio, before moving on to host the Rai Uno newscast and later on Tg2.


From here began his career aimed at scientific dissemination which in the following years led him to conceive numerous information transmissions. Among these we mention Destination Man (ten episodes), From zero to three years (three episodes), Where is the world going? (five episodes), In the darkness of light years (eight episodes), Survey on parapsychology (five episodes), In the cosmos in search of life (five episodes).

Later, in 1981, he established himself more and more in the sector thanks to the Rai Quark program, which in 1995 became what we know with the title SuperQuark. Finally, the journalist has edited for years the column "Science and society" on the weekly TV Sorrisi e Canzoni and was the editor and supervisor of the monthly Quark, which he himself founded in 2001 and dissolved in 2006 due to lack of funds.

Angela was the producer and presenter of Rai TV programmes such as Quark and Superquark, programmes which dealt with science, geography and history, and which drew millions of viewers over decades.

Born in 1928, Angela had started his career on radio before moving on to TV.

He has also published several books.
