Private Division has announced that it is working on a new Middle-earth game in collaboration with Weta Workshop, the team that created the CG effects for the film saga of The Lord of the Rings.

È So this is the Weta Workshop project revealed last November: a tie-in set in the narrative universe of Middle-earth, perhaps as part of a handover between Warner Bros. and 2K Games?

For the moment it is not clear how exactly things are: everything we know is contained in a post that the publisher has published on its official website, and in which it is revealed that the release of the game will take place in the course of fiscal year 2024. , which runs from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024.

"We are thrilled to be partnering with Weta Workshop to produce a game set in such an extraordinary and celebrated universe," said Michel Worosz, chief strategy officer at Take-Two Interactive and head of Private Division.

"The intellectual property of The Lord of the Rings is the source of so many fantastic stories, and no one is more qualified than Weta Workshop to create a new, memorable game experience set in Middle-earth."

"It is a privilege to create a new game set in Middle-earth, particularly as it will be very different than what fans have experienced in the past," said Amie Wolken, head of interactive at Weta. Workshop.

"We ourselves are fans of this work and we are excited to think that players will be able to explore Middle-earth in a completely new way, thus introducing new enthusiasts to the magic of The Lord of the Rings."

The game is in the early stages of development and has no official release date yet, but Private Division expects to release it in fiscal year 2024, as mentioned.

A new Middle-earth game is coming from Weta Workshop & Private Division

A new game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth universe has been announced by Private Division and Weta Workshop.

According to the announcement, it’s specifically the “literary works of the series” that have been licensed here. So that means the game will be based on the books rather than the movies. (Or, for example, the upcoming Amazon Prime TV series The Rings of Power.)

That being said, Weta Workshop are the special effects company best known for their work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. They established a games division in 2014, so this could end up with a similar, if legally distinct, vibe.

Amie Wolken, Head of Interactive at Weta, provides the following quote. ““It’s a privilege to create a new game set in Middle-earth, especially one that’s so different from what fans have played previously.”

“As fans ourselves,” she continues. “We’re excited for gamers to explore Middle-earth in a way they never have before, and introduce new fans to the magic of The Lord of the Rings.”

There’s not much in the way of further details on the game, which is currently in early development. There’s no release date, or platforms – but it’s expected to launch “during Take Two’s fiscal year 2024.” That puts it anywhere between April 2023 and March 2024.

It’s not the only upcoming Middle-earth game fans have to look forward to. However, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, from Daedelic Entertainment, was delayed to an unspecified date last month.

Private Division promises to share more about their Middle-earth project in the future.
