The Batman: the director's words about the costume

The Batman

Matt Reeves, the director of the forthcoming film The Batman, said the raw look of Robert Pattinson's Batman costume and equipment in the film was a deliberate and necessary choice.

“He is committed to this obsessive mission, ”Reeves told Total Film magazine of The Batman. “He's a rich guy who is able to use money to do these things, but he's doing it on his own. So I wanted, on a practical level, to see the seams in everything he is doing ”.

That the viewer can see the imperfections of Bruce Wayne's work was an important point for Reeves.

“In the jumpsuit, you can see the stitching on the hood. You can see that he is doing it all by himself. You can see he's building this car in his garage. You can see the rawness of it. There had to be some unfinished, unpolished quality. Obviously the car has to work, so I thought it must be like a muscle car. And the suit had to protect him, so he had to make sure it looked almost like tactical and riot gear. “

A 4K image of Pattinson wearing the Batcostume shown recently gave fans the first clear look at many of the details Reeves described.

The Batman, fear is a ' weapon against criminals

"But then there was another aspect, which was extremely important, and that was to understand that both (costume and car) have another purpose. And that purpose is to intimidate. There is a kind of horror aspect that is part of his intent, because his idea, tactically, is that he believes that if he can use fear, he can intimidate the criminal element, "Reeves explained.

Reeves continued: “So the Batman costume and the car had to be able to materialize from the shadows in a way that showed some kind of monstrous side. And so that was the other element that was super important. It was about marrying those two things. ”

Reeves had previously stated the need in The Batman for the Batmobile to be intimidating and scary when he explained how design is was influenced by Stephen King's killing car Christine.

“I liked the idea of the car itself as a horror figure, which has an animalistic feel to really scare the hell out of the people Batman is chasing ".

The Batman tie in novel reveals The Riddler's tragic origin story

While the previous live-action version of The Riddler played by Jim Carrey was more of a cartoonish villain who was a former employee of Wayne enterprises, it appears Paul Dano's version of the iconic villain takes a darker approach.

The novel explores the childhood of both Bruce Wayne and Edward Nashton aka The Riddler and their difficult childhood as both are orphans. The novel then shifts to Nashton in high school where he is bullied constantly it is also here that he discovers his love for puzzles.

This is also the time he starts developing a hatred for Wayne for his wealth and status. Nashton takes an interest in forensic science and eventually would end up working for the Gotham City police.

Director Matt Revees has in previous interviews described The Riddler's origins to that of a serial killer, with his jealousy and anger towards Bruce Wayne serving as a catalyst.

Reeves had this to say on his take on the Riddler -

'Early on, this idea of doing a serial-killer story popped into my head, and I started thinking about superheroes; the idea of wearing costumes,' Reeves said. 'I read Mindhunter. It made me think of the Zodiac killer, and how he actually wore this primitive costume that really is a primitive superhero costume… a rogues' gallery costume.'

'And I was like, 'Oh, that's really scary, the idea of people really wearing masks, and withholding their identities, and terrorizing people, and how scary that is.' And so, I started thinking, 'Well, it could be an origin tale for the Riddler, and it could be an origin tale for some of these other characters.''

The Batman will follow a young Bruce Wayne played by Robert Pattinson as he learns to embrace his role as Gotham city's protector and has to deal with a mysterious new villain who leaves cryptic clues for him to solve while the future of the city hangs in the balance.

The rest of the cast includes Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, and andy Serkis as Alfred.

The Batman will hit the big screen on March 4
