The United Nations has a new international agreement on the environment

The planned actions should help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10 gigatonnes per year, about one third of the overall reduction of CO2 envisaged by the United Nations report on the environment to mitigate global warming

The aim of the agreement is to halt and reverse the ecological destruction of planet Earth by the end of the decade, through incisive actions involving all member countries.

After the long negotiations that took place between May and June, the draft will be evaluated definitively next October, during the summit of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in the Chinese city of Kunming. By signing the text, the various countries will undertake to eliminate pollution due to plastics, to reduce the global use of pesticides by two thirds and to eliminate all government subsidies intended to finance dangerous environmental practices. In addition, the agreement provides for the creation of protected areas that include at least 30% of the seas and emerged lands, the improvement of the integrity and protection of all ecosystems, the 90% reduction of the current extinction rate of species. animals and the investment of financial resources to achieve the objectives. The Kunming summit has already been postponed twice and, according to the Guardian, could be postponed again due to the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus. In this case, it could be held around the first half of next year.

The agreement will have a big impact on the agricultural supply chain, which will have to be adapted to have a smaller impact on the ecosystem but feed more humans, Basile van Havre, co-chair of the working group, reminded the Guardian drafted the text of the agreement. “It's not about decreasing the level of activity” he added “it's about increasing production but doing better for nature”. In fact, in the draft, among the 21 objectives set to the governments of the United Nations countries, there are also the restoration of peatlands (places characterized by high humidity such as marshes and swamps) and the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices, which will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions of about 10 gigatonnes per year. This is almost a third of the overall reduction of CO2 expected by the United Nations report on the environment to mitigate global warming.
