Our comment on AEW Double or Nothing 2021

AEW Double or Nothing 2021 was certainly one of the best PPV events of the AEW in recent months thanks to the presence of the extremely enthusiastic and participatory public , and a decidedly more precise direction than previous events. Excluding a card whose matches left relatively little room for surprise victories, the event kept the attention high, offering enjoyable matches free of technical flaws. The only small note of demerit is perhaps the excessive overbooking and use of various interferences that have dangerously relaxed the tension of some matches (including the one for the AEW World Championship) providing important information to the booking team for the future development of the storylines.

The triptych of initial matches (including the buy-in) was truly blazing-fast by returning an Adam Page and Eddie Kingston as fan favorite, hearing the pops of the audience is believing. The first, perhaps only, surprise comes from the winner of the Casino Battle Royale that rewards the exponential improvement of Jungle Boy. Credit to Christian Cage who, as a true veteran, makes the boy sweat the last elimination, making his victory credible; to report the debut in the match of Lio Rush (ex-NXT) and highflyer with enormous potential. Enjoyable match but with many margins for improvement.

Cody Rhodes wins but does not overwhelm by enhancing a decent prospect like Anthony Ogogo. Yet another job by Lance Archer in favor of Miro: it's a shame because the Texan deserves more consideration, but the Bulgarian, besides his undoubted athletic abilities, is bringing a somewhat stale character to the screen. Their match is good.

After 362 as champion Hikaru Shida hands over the AEW Women's World Championship belt to Britt Baker. A passage that has been postponed several times but which takes place with a solid match (net of the usual inaccuracies of the Japanese athlete) and consecrated the rise of the Doctor. Cinta deserved.

Sting and Darby Allin vs. Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page is a classic old-school tag team match that gives us back a Sting in decent shape (his last wrestled match was in 2015 before the serious neck injury). The Icon does his as well as Darby Allin (the spot of the flight in the audience was incredible) while Scorpio Sky sells very well the moves and Ethan Page scorns a character who could reserve surprises.

Great match that for the AEW World Championship tainted by a confusing and frankly redundant ending. Orange Cassidy, PAC and Kenny Omega do not need any means to engage the public and 90% of the match proved it.

Before the Stadium Stampede, Tony Schiavone announced the arrival at the commentary table of Rampage (the federation's second weekly show starting in 2022) by veteran Mark Henry.

Halfway between street fight and cinematic (true reinvention of wrestling in a pandemic), the Stadium Stampede was enjoyable, perhaps a little verbose in the street fighting phase and a little less spectacular than that last year. On the other hand, having concluded him in the ring has significantly added strength to the feud between the two factions that could end here if the Inner Circle turns face and goes against the Elite.
