VyprVPN - Review

VyprVPN stands out from other VPN services for its apps, which are both very functional and intuitive. For those who connect from countries where there is strong censorship of the Internet, as well as strict laws on the use of Virtual Private Networks, VyprVPN is one of the first options to consider thanks to the proprietary Chameleon protocol, while for other uses, from the unblocking of streaming services such as Netflix to the use of Torrents, it cannot keep up with the competition, also thanks to a pricing that is not exactly competitive.

If you are not very familiar with services of this type, we invite you to read our article explaining what a VPN is and how it works.

In addition, it offers a network of over 700 servers in more than 70 locations, spread across 60+ countries. In addition, VyprVPN offers a pool of over 300,000 IP addresses.

Another positive aspect is that VyprVPN manages the servers directly, without intermediaries.

Among other advantages, there are the possibility of use DNS anonymously, the custom Chameleon protocol which, as we said, helps bypass VPN blocks, as well as support for the WireGuard protocol. Good news for P2P too, since there is total support, with assistance guaranteed 24/7.

VyprVPN can be installed on a wide range of platforms, ranging from the more traditional ones such as Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, routers and devices (including QNAP) and Smart TVs, to less common ones such as Chromebook, Linux, NAS Synology, Android TV and much more, thanks to the very useful tutorials on the site. The defect? There are no browser extensions, which is a real shame.

VyprVPN plans and pricing

In the past, VyprVPN's pricing involved several different packages, perhaps too many, however the company changed direction recently, reducing the plans to two, one monthly and one yearly.

Unfortunately, the prices are not very competitive compared to other providers, especially those that heavily discount the average monthly cost through multi-year subscriptions.

VyprVPN, in fact , is one of the most expensive providers on the market, moreover even in terms of payment methods there is not much choice: you can only pay via PayPal or by card.

12 months | € 7.17, with single billing and possibility of full refund within 30 days 1 month | 13,00 € with single billing

Privacy and no log

Like many other rivals, VyprVPN also adopts a "no-log" policy and in 2018 the company has undergone an independent audit by Leviathan Security Group, the results of which are publicly available in a freely searchable PDF report. Of course it's been 4 years now, but not all providers decide to undergo an audit. We hope that the company decides to continue on this path and maybe repeat the procedure to get the most up-to-date information.

Furthermore, the Chameleon protocol has recently been updated to version 2.0, for greater stability also in areas like China where VPNs are blocked. The protocol is available on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS.

In terms of privacy, VyprVPN has adopted several protocols and encryption methods. Basically, AES-256-GCM and SHA384 HMAC are supported, with TLS-ECDHE-RSA-2048. The latter guarantees the use of a different key on each connection, through a technique known as Perfect Forward Secrecy, for greater session security.

Most of the company's apps, including the Windows client , supports the IKEv2 protocol, while PPTP and L2TP have been abandoned for some time.

VyprVPN, then, offers a 100% anonymous and encrypted DNS service and all apps are equipped with privacy protection mechanisms, with DNS leak protection and the presence of the kill switch, a tool that interrupts the connection in case of VPN drops.

Performance and streaming

Unfortunately, VyprVPN fails to shine in the speed of connection. In OpenVPN we did not exceed 50 Mbps (with a 1 Gbps connection and tests in the US and UK).

The other protocols, however, do better. With WireGuard in the UK we have reached 350 Mbps, a figure certainly not up to the standard of other providers, but still sufficient for most of the use cases.

Turning to the unblocking of geolocated content, unfortunately VyprVPN is not manages to bypass the security systems of Netflix USA, although it is possible to unblock P rime Video USA and Disney Plus.

If streaming is one of the most important factors for you, there are other companies that offer a lot of service. more effective at a much lower cost.

Apps and other features

VyprVPN's apps are all quite similar to each other, unlike other services, with a closer style Windows client to mobile apps. The latter presents the connection status, preferred server location and a list of supported geographies, filterable by region and city, along with the ping value.

The Windows client supports OpenVPN, Chameleon and IKEv2, while has abandoned L2TP and PPTP forever. The kill switch is integrated and works well, cutting off Internet access in case the connection to the VPN is lost.

The Android app is identical to the Windows one from a graphical point of view, with many functions in common. In addition, we find the URL filter, but unfortunately there is no support for IKEv2.

On iOS, however, the kill switch and the URL block are missing, but it is possible to set custom DNS. Unlike the Android version, here you can choose IKEv2, as well as manually configure OpenVPN, L2TP / IPSec and PPTP.

Moving on to torrents, although the company never explicitly mentions P2P, as a general rule, VyprVPN never checks the content of traffic on servers, and consequently ports are never blocked. Therefore, torrenting and peer-to-peer are allowed without any limitation. Furthermore, the company will never be able to trace a user who has made illegal downloads from one of VyprVPN's servers, further proof that the privacy and anonymity of users are really priorities for this provider. br>
Finally, the site contains dozens and dozens of guides and tutorials that cover various topics, from installing the client (quite elementary in itself) to configuring services on various platforms. Registering for the service is just as simple and straightforward and in any case the assistance service is available 24 hours a day.

Verdict

Bottom line, VyprVPN is a fairly expensive service for what it offers. Of course, it is very reliable and respectful of privacy and anonymity, indeed we would say ideal for those who are in territories where VPNs are not frowned upon at all. However, the below average speeds, and the small number of unblocked streaming services do not fully justify the high prices, especially considering that other competitors do much better with really competitive rates.

In any case, if your priority is to choose a company that truly refrains from monitoring traffic and identifying user activity, or perhaps bypassing government censorship, VyprVPN could be a viable choice.
