Dungeons & Dragons: Fizban is coming!

Dungeons & Dragons

On the occasion of the first day of D&D Live, Wizards of the Coast has unveiled the title of the new manual of Dungeons & Dragons: Fizban's Treasury Of Dragons.

The new supplement will be entirely dedicated to dragons and will contain information about the setting, rulebook insights, new player options and a host of new themed monsters. Despite the title of the manual, Fizban's Treasury Of Dragons won't be a setting volume, so Dragonlance fans will have to wait a little longer to read about this setting for Fifth Edition.

Who is Fizban the Fabulous?

Fizban's Treasury Of Dragons continues the tried and tested formula of the Fifth Edition manuals in which the theme, speaking of the volume, is contextualized in a metatextual way, thanks to information in the margin written by one of the iconic characters of the boundless mythology of Dungeons & Dragons.

Fizban the Fabulous is a character from the Dragonlance saga, which is introduced for the first time in the pages of The Dragons of Autumn Twilight (link Amazon), the first book of the saga. This character looks like an old wizard with a distracted air and a smoky temperament; among his distinctive features the long white beard and the shapeless hat of which he continually forgets.

The old magician actually hides a secret: he is, in reality, the earthly incarnation of the god Paladine, divinity benevolent whose true form is that of a majestic platinum dragon.

Guided by the amusing notes of this eccentric dragon deity, Fizban's Treasury Of Dragons will be a real "dracology" manual and will include all the information on dragons and their related creatures, eventually revealing the history of the First World and the role played by Bahamut and Tiamat in its creation and destruction.

Everything you ever wanted to know about dragons

Fizban's Treasury Of Dragons, as anticipated, will be an anthological volume on dragons and their role within Dungeons & Dragons. This Fifth Edition supplement, in addition to detailing every aspect related to these fantastic creatures, will illustrate the cosmological role of dragons and the motifs that led dragons to become the Kings of Mythological Creatures, as well as an integral part of this RPG's title. .

From the point of view of the contents of this supplement, some of the options present in Fizban's Treasury Of Dragons had been presented and tested in recent months through the Unearthed Arcana, which Wizards periodically submits to its community.

The main novelty of the manual will be the return of the gem dragons, which first appeared in the second edition, first unofficially in Dragon # 37 of May 1980 and then 12 years later officially in the Monstrous Compendium Fiend Folio Appendix. The gemed dragons in previous editions completed the dragon landscape, placing themselves halfway between the chromatic (typically evil) and metallic (typically good) dragons; the five neutral dragons were named after five colored gems: amethyst, crystal, emerald, sapphire and topaz. In Fifth Edition these dragons will feature damage types such as Strength (Amethyst), Radiant (Crystal), Psychic (Emerald), Thunder (Sapphire) and Necrotic (Topaz) that are different from those associated with other dragon types.

Player character options will include new options for dragonborn origins, new dragon-themed subclasses for monks and rangers, and new options for talents and spells.

The Dungeon Masters will instead find all the regulation information aimed at further developing the topic, such as the detailed description of the lairs of 20 different dragons. In addition to draconic ecology and ethology, Fizban's Treasury Of Dragons will feature a comprehensive bestiary that will include a variety of new dragons, related creatures, aspects of dragon gods, dragon servants and more.

Fizban's Treasury Of Dragons: When it comes out

Fizban's Treasury Of Dragons will be released, in English, starting October 19, 2021. As is customary, this manual will also be produced in two versions, alternative and regular cover, with the alternative edition reserved for the specialized sales point circuit.

Both covers will present the same subject, the fight between a red dragon and a crystal dragon, but the two illustrations will differ to suit the editorial line that wants a more unified design for the regular editions and a more distinctive one for the alternative ones.
